Ever feel like your Scion xB is just holding its breath, especially when you ask for a little more on the highway or merging onto the freeway? This cold air intake system lets your 2.4L breathe freely, giving you that satisfying punch you’ve been missing.
Performance Cold Air Intake for Scion xB (2.4L 4-Cylinder)
The factory air box on your 2008-2015 Scion xB’s 2.4L engine is designed for quiet operation, not peak performance. Its convoluted path, resonator boxes, and restrictive paper filter choke the engine, limiting its ability to draw in the cool, dense air it craves for optimal combustion.
Our high-flow cold air intake system completely re-engineers this critical pathway. By replacing the stock setup with smooth, wide-diameter T-304 aluminum tubing and a large, free-flowing performance filter, we dramatically reduce turbulence and restriction, delivering a consistent, cooler charge of air directly to your throttle body. This means your engine isn’t working as hard to pull air, translating directly into more usable power and a crisper throttle feel.
Why You Need This Upgrade
- Sharper Throttle Response: Eliminates the intake restrictions found in factory setups, providing an immediate connection between the pedal and the engine. You’ll feel less lag and a more direct pull.
- Increased Horsepower & Torque: By optimizing airflow and delivering a denser, cooler air charge, your 2.4L can ignite fuel more efficiently, translating to measurable gains in both peak horsepower and torque across the RPM range.
- Improved Fuel Efficiency: A more efficient engine that breathes better doesn’t have to work as hard. Many drivers report a slight bump in miles per gallon under normal cruising conditions after installing a quality cold air intake.
- Aggressive Engine Note: Beyond the performance, this system lets you actually hear your engine breathe. The factory muffles everything, but you’ll get a satisfying, deeper growl from your xB, especially under acceleration.
- Premium, Durable Construction: Crafted from lightweight T-304 aluminum piping, this intake not only looks great but is built to last. It resists corrosion and helps shed heat rapidly, keeping your intake air temps as low as possible.

Installation & Tools
Installation & Tools
The Wrench Time
- Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
- Difficulty: 3/10 - Removing the upper factory airbox is straightforward, but wrestling the hidden factory resonator out of the inner fender well takes a little patience.
Tools You Will Need
- 10mm and 12mm sockets with a 6-inch extension and ratchet
- Flathead screwdriver or panel popper tool
- #2 Phillips screwdriver
- 8mm socket or nut driver
- Needle-nose pliers
The 2AZ-FE engine uses a highly sensitive Denso MAF sensor, and the factory screws holding it in are technically JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard), not standard Phillips. Apply firm downward pressure when removing them so you don’t strip the heads. Also, watch out for the brittle plastic PCV and VSV (Vacuum Switching Valve) hose nipples on your Gen 2 Toaster; years of heat cycling make them snap easily if you yank the rubber hoses off dry. Twist the hoses gently with pliers first to break the seal before pulling.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench on your 2008-2015 Scion xB 2.4L to prevent check engine lights and force the ECU to reset its fuel trims.
- Pull the MAF Sensor: Depress the clip on the wiring harness and unplug the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. Use your #2 Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws. Carefully pull the sensor straight up and place it somewhere safe where the sensing element won’t get dirty or dropped. Do not touch the element wires inside.
- Disconnect Vacuum Lines: Use your needle-nose pliers to pinch the spring clamps on the factory PCV and vacuum breather hoses attached to the stock intake tube. Slide the clamps back and carefully twist the hoses off the plastic nipples.
- Remove the Upper Airbox and Tube: Use a 10mm socket or flathead screwdriver to loosen the primary hose clamp at the throttle body. Unclip the metal retaining clips on the airbox lid, pull the factory rubber intake tube off the throttle body, and remove the upper assembly entirely.
- Extract the Lower Box and Resonator: Remove the three 10mm bolts securing the lower airbox to the chassis. To fully remove the massive factory resonator hidden in the driver’s side fender, turn your steering wheel all the way to the right, use a panel popper to remove the front inner fender liner clips, peel the plastic back, and reach in with a 10mm socket on an extension to remove the final hidden mounting bolt. Pull the resonator down and out.
Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Scion xB (2008-2015) 2.4L Engine
- Mount the Silicone Coupler: Slide the provided silicone reducer coupler onto the factory throttle body. Secure the throttle body side by tightening the provided worm-gear or T-bolt clamp using an 8mm socket or flathead screwdriver. Leave the clamp on the intake-tube side loose for now.
- Install the New Intake Tube: Carefully route the new cold air intake tube down into the engine bay and through the fender well opening. Slide the top end into the silicone coupler at the throttle body. Bolt the welded aluminum bracket on the intake tube to the factory chassis mounting point using a 10mm socket and the supplied hardware. Leave the bolt hand-tight until everything is aligned.
- Transfer the MAF Sensor: Insert your factory Denso MAF sensor into the CNC-machined housing on the new intake tube. Secure it using the supplied aftermarket Allen-head bolts and a hex key (do not reuse the factory Phillips screws). Plug the factory wiring harness back in until you hear a definitive click.
- Reconnect PCV and Breather Lines: Push your factory vacuum and PCV hoses onto the welded aluminum nipples on the new intake tube. Re-secure them using your needle-nose pliers to slide the factory spring clamps back into their original locking positions. Once aligned, fully tighten the remaining clamp at the throttle body coupler and the 10mm bracket bolt.
- Mount the Filter and Perform the Relearn: Reach through the opened inner fender liner to slide the high-flow air filter onto the bottom of the intake tube. Tighten the filter clamp securely with an 8mm socket. Re-pin your inner fender liner. Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Turn the key to the ON position, start the engine, and DO NOT touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds so the ECU can safely calibrate to the new, increased airflow volume.
