Maximize Efficiency and Throttle Response for the Scion xA & xB 1NZ-FE

Who It’s For: Designed specifically for 2004-2006 Scion xA and xB owners running the 1NZ-FE engine who want to wake up their daily driver or weekend project.

The Problem: The factory airbox in the 1NZ-FE is a masterclass in compromise. It uses restrictive plastic baffles and corrugated tubing designed to keep the engine quiet, which unfortunately creates turbulence and traps heat. This "heat soak" leads to sluggish throttle response and a noticeable lack of top-end pull, especially when you’re trying to merge or pass on the highway.

The Solution: This Cold Air Intake replaces that restrictive factory plumbing with high-flow T304 aluminum. By smoothing out the air path and relocating the filter, we allow the 1NZ-FE to breathe much more efficiently. It corrects the factory airflow limitations, delivering a crisper throttle feel and a deep, throaty sound that the stock plastic box completely hides.

Why This is the Ultimate Upgrade

  • Optimized Airflow: Engineered to boost horsepower and torque by up to 10% by reducing intake restriction and lowering intake air temperatures.
  • Premium Construction: Built with mandrel-bent T304 lightweight aluminum piping that resists corrosion and looks much cleaner in your engine bay than the stock black plastic.
  • Low Maintenance: Includes a high-flow, washable synthetic filter that only requires cleaning every 50,000 miles, eliminating the need for expensive paper filter replacements.

Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time

  • Estimated Time: 60-90 Minutes
  • Difficulty: 3/10 - Basic hand tools, but wrestling the factory resonator out of the 1NZ-FE fender well requires patience and maneuvering.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm socket and 12mm socket with a 6-inch extension
  • 8mm socket or flathead screwdriver for hose clamps
  • Panel popper tool for brittle fender liner clips
  • JIS #2 screwdriver (or a very snug Phillips #2) for MAF screws
  • Needle-nose pliers for factory spring clamps
  • Floor jack and lug wrench (highly recommended for wheel well access)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The Scion community knows the 1NZ-FE engine holds two major headaches for this job. First, the factory Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor screws look like Phillips, but they are Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS). A standard Phillips will strip them if they are seized. Apply firm downward pressure. Second, the factory intake resonator is buried inside the driver-side fender well. Don’t try to force it out from the top. Jack up the driver-side front, pop the fender liner clips, and pull it out through the wheel well.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights while we swap sensors on your 2004-2006 Scion xA xB 1.5L.
  2. Extract the MAF Sensor: Unplug the MAF sensor wiring harness. Using your JIS #2 screwdriver, carefully remove the two screws. Pull the MAF sensor straight up and out. This is the glass jaw of your engine management system—place it somewhere safe where it won’t get dropped or contaminated.
  3. Remove the Upper Airbox: Use your pliers to pinch and slide back the spring clamp on the PCV breather hose attached to the intake. Next, use a 10mm socket to loosen the hose clamp at the throttle body. Unclip the airbox lid and pull the entire upper section and paper filter out.
  4. Unbolt the Lower Airbox: Remove the three 10mm bolts securing the lower half of the factory airbox to the chassis and lift it out.
  5. Evacuate the Fender Resonator: Turn your steering wheel all the way to the right (or remove the driver-side front wheel). Use your panel popper to carefully remove the plastic push-clips holding the front half of the driver-side fender liner. Peel the liner back to reveal the hidden factory resonator. Use a 10mm socket and 12mm socket to remove its mounting bolts, then wriggle the bulky plastic assembly down and out of the vehicle.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Scion xA/xB (2004-2006) 1.5L L4 Engine

  1. Mount the Throttle Body Coupler: Slide the provided silicone step-coupler onto your throttle body. Slide the new worm gear or T-bolt clamps over the coupler, but leave them loose for now.
  2. Route the New Piping: Carefully feed the new cold air intake pipe down through the engine bay hole where the factory box sat, routing the lower end into the fender well void. Insert the upper end into the silicone coupler at the throttle body. Line up the pipe’s welded bracket with the factory chassis mounting hole and loosely secure it with a 10mm socket and the provided hardware.
  3. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Gently wipe the MAF sensor O-ring to ensure it is clean. Slide it straight down into the new billet MAF housing on your intake pipe. Secure it using the provided aftermarket Allen head screws and a hex key. Snug them down evenly, but do not overtighten and crush the O-ring.
  4. Attach the Filter and Hoses: Down in the fender well, push the high-flow cone filter onto the end of the intake pipe and tighten the clamp firmly with an 8mm socket. Back up top, connect the provided PCV breather hose from the engine valve cover to the welded nipple on the new intake pipe.
  5. Lock It Down and Relearn: Tighten the throttle body coupler clamps using an 8mm socket and snug down the 10mm bolt on the chassis bracket. Reconnect the MAF sensor harness. Reconnect your negative battery terminal with a 10mm wrench. On the first startup of your 2004-2006 Scion xA xB 1.5L, do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. The ECU needs this undisturbed idle time to adjust its fuel trims to the massive increase in cold airflow.
