Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The 2gn (second generation) Neon community knows one universal pain point: the factory IAT (Intake Air Temperature) sensor. It is jammed into a rubber grommet that dry-rots from engine heat. If you just grab and yank it out cold, the brittle plastic thermistor cage will snap off inside the tube, throwing an immediate check engine light. Spray silicone lube around the base, twist it gently back and forth to break the seal, and pull straight out. Be equally gentle with the factory PCV breather hose, as those 20-year-old plastic lines are notorious for shattering.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and reset the ECU on your 2000-2005 Plymouth Neon 2.0L.
  2. Unplug the IAT Sensor: Depress the locking tab on the IAT sensor wiring harness and unplug it. Tuck the wire safely aside.
  3. Remove the PCV Breather: Pull the factory PCV breather hose off the side of the stock airbox. If it’s stuck, use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry the rubber lip.

Reach up into the fender well with a 10mm socket and extension to unbolt and remove the restrictive factory resonator box.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Plymouth Neon (2000-2005) 2.0L Engine - Red

  1. Mount the Silicone Coupler: Slide the provided silicone reducer coupler onto the 2.0L throttle body. Slide two hose clamps over it, tightening the throttle body side down snugly with an 8mm socket.
  2. Route the Red Intake Pipe: Carefully snake the lower section of the new red intake piping down through the hole in the engine bay into the inner fender well where the old resonator lived. Insert the upper section into the silicone coupler at the throttle body.
  3. Transfer the IAT Sensor: Push the provided rubber grommet into the pre-drilled hole on the new intake pipe. Apply a tiny drop of silicone lube to your factory IAT sensor and push it delicately into the new grommet until seated. Reconnect the wiring harness and attach the new supplied PCV breather hose.
  4. Install the Filter and Bracket: From inside the wheel well, slide the new conical air filter onto the bottom of the intake pipe. Secure it by tightening the worm gear clamp with an 8mm socket. Align the welded L-bracket on the pipe to a factory threaded hole on the chassis and bolt it down using a 10mm socket to prevent vibration chafing.
  5. ECU Relearn Protocol: Double-check all clamps for vacuum leaks. Reinstall your splash shield clips. Reconnect the negative battery terminal with your 10mm wrench. Start the engine. Do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. Let the vehicle idle so the ECU can properly adjust its fuel trims to the increased cold airflow.
