Performance Cold Air Intake System for 1988–1995 Toyota 4Runner, Pickup & T100 3.0L V6
Imagine conquering the trails or cruising the highway with your classic Toyota breathing easier than ever. This precision-engineered cold air intake transforms how your legendary 3.0L V6 performs—the same rugged powerplant that helped build Toyota's off-road reputation throughout the late '80s and '90s. Your 4Runner, Pickup, or T100 deserves to perform at its peak, and this system delivers exactly that.
Why Upgrade Your Factory Intake?
The factory air box prioritizes quiet operation over performance, creating restrictive bottlenecks that limit your engine's true potential. This cold air intake replaces that constraint with a high-flow design that draws cooler, denser air from outside the engine bay. The result? More oxygen reaches your combustion chambers, creating stronger explosions that translate directly into power you can feel. Whether you're climbing steep grades or merging onto the freeway, experience up to 10% gains in horsepower and torque across the entire RPM range.
Built for the 3VZ-E Heritage
The 3.0L V6 in these Toyotas earned its reputation for reliability and capability. This intake honors that legacy by optimizing airflow through a streamlined induction tube that reduces turbulence and improves velocity. Feel sharper throttle response when you need it, hear a more aggressive mechanical tone under acceleration, and enjoy the confidence of consistent performance whether you're navigating daily traffic or tackling challenging terrain.
Key Performance Benefits
- Up to 10% Power Increase: Enhanced horsepower and torque for better acceleration and towing capability
- Cooler Air Charge: Draws fresh air from outside the hot engine bay for maximum density and efficiency
- Instant Throttle Response: Direct airflow path creates an immediate connection between pedal and performance
- Enhanced Engine Sound: Hear your V6's true mechanical character during hard acceleration
- Superior Filtration: Reusable high-flow filter blocks contaminants while maximizing airflow
Complete Bolt-On Installation
Your kit includes everything needed: high-velocity induction piping, premium reusable air filter, plus all couplers, clamps, and hardware. Installation requires basic hand tools and approximately 1-2 hours. Important: Disconnect the battery's negative cable before starting and leave disconnected for one minute after completion—this resets your ECU to learn the improved airflow characteristics.

Installation & Tools
Installation & Tools
The Wrench Time
- Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
- Difficulty: 3/10 - Basic hand tools required, but wrestling 30-year-old baked rubber and a sensitive VAFM requires patience.
Tools You Will Need
- 10mm and 12mm sockets (3/8-inch drive with a 6-inch extension)
- 10mm combination wrench
- Phillips #2 screwdriver
- 8mm nut driver or flathead screwdriver (for hose clamps)
- Needle-nose pliers
- Utility knife or fresh razor blade
The 1988-1995 Toyota 4Runner 3.0L (3VZ-E) doesn’t use a modern hot-wire MAF; it uses a VAFM (Volume Air Flow Meter) with a heavy mechanical flapper door inside. DO NOT drop it, and do not blast harsh carb cleaner into it, or you will ruin the calibration. Furthermore, the factory vacuum lines attached to your OEM intake silencer box will be brittle as glass. Do not yank them. Slice them longitudinally with a razor blade and peel them off to avoid snapping the plastic nipples on your intake manifold.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part from your 1988-1995 Toyota 4Runner 3.0L
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and reset the ECU.
- Unplug the VAFM: Locate the bulky Volume Air Flow Meter on top of the factory airbox. Depress the metal wire retention clip on the harness connector and pull straight back to unplug it. Tuck the wire out of the way.
- Detach Vacuum Lines: Using your needle-nose pliers, carefully slide back the tension clamps on the vacuum lines connected to the factory intake tubing and the plastic silencer box (resonator). Gently twist and pull the lines off. If they are fused to the plastic, slice the tips with a razor blade.
- Loosen the Clamps: Grab your Phillips #2 screwdriver and loosen the large factory hose clamps securing the rubber corrugated intake tube to the throttle body and to the VAFM. Pull the hardened rubber tube off the throttle body.
- Extract the Airbox: Using a 12mm socket and extension, remove the three bolts securing the factory airbox to the inner fender apron. Lift the entire airbox assembly, with the VAFM still attached, completely out of the engine bay.
Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake
- Transfer the VAFM: Place your factory airbox on a workbench. Use a 10mm socket to unbolt the heavy VAFM unit from the factory airbox lid. Carefully lift it off, ensuring you preserve the rubber O-ring gasket. Bolt the VAFM onto your new aftermarket heat shield or adapter plate using the provided hardware and a 10mm wrench. Tighten firmly, but do not crush the gasket.
- Mount the Heat Shield: Drop the new heat shield and VAFM assembly back into the engine bay. Align it with the factory airbox mounting holes and secure it down using the original bolts and your 12mm socket.
- Install the Couplers: Slide the new silicone couplers onto the vehicle’s throttle body and the VAFM outlet. Slip the provided hose clamps over the couplers, leaving them loose for now.
- Route the Intake Pipe: Guide the new polished Cold Air Intake pipe into the silicone couplers. Adjust the angle until it sits flush without rubbing on the brake master cylinder or engine accessories. Once aligned, lock down all hose clamps using your 8mm nut driver.
- Reconnect Vacuum & Power: Push your factory vacuum lines onto the welded aluminum nipples on the new intake pipe. Reconnect the VAFM wiring harness until it clicks. Finally, reconnect the negative battery cable with your 10mm wrench. On the first startup, do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds so the 1988-1995 Toyota 4Runner 3.0L ECU can properly relearn its idle curve with the increased airflow.
