Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The VQ40DE community knows the D40 chassis has a notorious weak point: the factory Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor screws. Nissan used soft JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) screws that strip instantly if you attack them with a worn-out standard Phillips screwdriver. Press firmly and break them loose by hand before using any power tools. Additionally, never touch the exposed amber elements on the MAF sensor wire—oil from your fingers will ruin it and cause an immediate check engine light.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent electrical shorts and check engine lights on your 2005-2019 Nissan Frontier 4.0L.
  2. Unplug the MAF Sensor: Carefully press the release tab on the wiring harness and pull the connector off the MAF sensor. Tuck the wire safely out of the way.
  3. Dismantle the Intake Tract: Grab your 8mm socket and loosen the hose clamps at the throttle body and the factory airbox. Use your pliers to pinch and slide back the clamp on the PCV breather hose, then pull the hose off the tube. Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Nissan Frontier (2005-2019) 4.0L Engine - Black

  1. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Using your JIS #2 screwdriver, carefully extract the two soft factory screws. Gently pull the sensor straight out of the OEM housing. Seat it squarely into the billet MAF pad on your new black intake tube and secure it using the supplied hardware and a 4mm Allen wrench. Do not over-torque.
  2. Mount the Heat Shield: Drop the new aftermarket heat shield into the void left by the factory airbox. Bolt it down to the OEM fender mounting points using your 10mm socket and the provided hardware. Ensure the weatherstripping is pressed firmly against the hood line.
  3. Install the Coupler and Tube: Slide the provided silicone coupler over the 4.0L throttle body and loosely place the clamps over the ends. Push the new intake tube into the coupler, route it through the heat shield opening, and tighten down the clamps securely with your 8mm socket.
  4. Mount the Filter and Breather: Slide the high-flow cone filter onto the end of the intake tube inside the heat shield and tighten the clamp. Push your factory PCV breather line onto the welded fitting on the new tube and secure it with the factory spring clamp using your pliers.
  5. Reconnect and Initialize: Plug the factory wiring harness back into the MAF sensor until you hear a solid click. Reconnect your negative battery terminal with a 10mm wrench. Start the truck, but do not touch the gas pedal for 20 seconds; let the ECU adjust to the massive increase in airflow volume and relearn the idle parameters.
