Performance Cold Air Intake for Nissan Frontier (VQ40DE)
The 4.0L V6 in the 2005-2019 Frontier is a proven, reliable workhorse. But if you have spent any time driving one, you know the factory intake setup leaves a lot to be desired. The stock corrugated plastic tubing and bulky paper filter housing create unwanted turbulence, choking off the engine when you need passing power or low-end grunt for towing.
By swapping the factory restriction for a streamlined T304 aluminum pipe and a high-flow conical filter, you instantly smooth out the air path. This direct flow translates directly into sharper pedal feel and a noticeable bump in mid-range torque. Plus, it finally lets you hear that classic V6 exhaust note under heavy acceleration without dealing with a droning exhaust system on the highway.
Why You Need This Upgrade
- Noticeable Power Gains: Boosts horsepower and torque by up to 10%, giving you better acceleration and towing capability.
- Sharper Throttle Response: Smooth aluminum piping eliminates the turbulence of the stock corrugated tube, making your right foot feel directly connected to the engine.
- Aggressive Induction Sound: Delivers a deep, throaty intake roar under load while remaining quiet while cruising.
- Never Buy Another Filter: The included high-flow filter is fully washable and only requires cleaning every 50,000 miles under normal driving conditions.
- Warranty Safe: Designed to comply with manufacturer regulations, so you can upgrade without stressing about your dealership.

Installation Notes
This is a straightforward bolt-on job that takes less than an hour in the driveway. You only need basic hand tools like flathead screwdrivers and a standard socket set to remove the factory airbox and mount the new aluminum piping. Crucial step: Always disconnect the negative terminal on your battery before starting. Leave it disconnected during the install so your engine computer resets and properly calibrates to the increased airflow.

Installation & Tools
Installation & Tools
The Wrench Time
- Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
- Difficulty: 3/10 - Basic bolt-on upgrade; requires gentle handling of delicate electronics.
Tools You Will Need
- 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet (with 3-inch extension)
- 10mm open-end wrench
- 8mm socket or flathead screwdriver
- #2 Phillips screwdriver (or T20 Torx depending on OEM MAF screw revision)
- Pliers (for factory spring-style hose clamps)
- Panel popper (optional, for wiring harness loom clips)
The VQ40DE platform is notorious for brittle plastic clips and stripped MAF sensor housings. When transferring your factory Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor to the new intake pipe, hand-thread the screws first to avoid cross-threading into the aluminum boss. Also, inspect the rubber O-ring on the sensor body; if it rolls or tears upon insertion, you will end up with unmetered air entering the engine and an immediate P0171/P0174 lean code on your D40 Frontier.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part
- Disconnect the Battery: On your 2005-2019 Nissan Frontier 4.0L, use a 10mm wrench to loosen and remove the negative (-) battery terminal. Tuck it aside to prevent accidental contact and to reset fuel trims.
- Disconnect the MAF Sensor Harness: Depress the locking tab on the grey Mass Airflow sensor connector located on top of the factory intake duct and pull straight back. Use a panel popper or flathead screwdriver to gently release the wire harness anchor clip from the factory airbox.
- Disconnect the PCV Breather Hose: Using pliers, squeeze the factory spring clamp securing the crankcase ventilation hose to the OEM intake tube, slide it back, and pull the rubber hose free from the fitting.
- Remove the OEM Intake Duct: Loosen the factory hose clamp at the throttle body and the clamp at the airbox outlet using an 8mm socket or flathead screwdriver. Wiggle the corrugated factory intake tube off the throttle body and remove it from the engine bay.
- Remove the Factory Airbox: Use a 10mm socket to unbolt the mounting bolt inside the lower airbox housing. Pull the entire airbox assembly firmly upward to dislodge the alignment pins from the factory lower rubber grommets mounted in the inner fender apron.
Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Nissan Frontier (2005-2019) 4.0L V6 Engine Black
- Transfer the Factory MAF Sensor: Carefully remove the two screws securing the MAF sensor to the OEM airbox lid using a #2 Phillips screwdriver. Slide the sensor straight out without touching the delicate hot-wire element. Insert the sensor into the new black intake tube boss and secure it using the supplied hardware and a Phillips screwdriver. Hand-tighten until snug—do not overtighten.
- Mount the Heat Shield Assembly: Place the new heat shield into the factory airbox location on your 2005-2019 Nissan Frontier 4.0L. Align it with the factory mounting points and secure it using the provided hardware and a 10mm socket.
- Install Throttle Body Coupler and Intake Pipe: Slip the silicone coupler onto the VQ40DE throttle body and secure the inner clamp loosely with an 8mm socket. Insert the new black intake pipe into the coupler, route the other end through the heat shield opening, and secure the PCV hose over the welded intake port using the factory clamp and pliers.
- Install Air Filter and Secure All Clamps: Mount the conical performance air filter onto the end of the intake tube inside the heat shield enclosure. Tighten the filter clamp and all silicone coupler clamps using an 8mm socket or flathead screwdriver, ensuring the intake pipe has clearance away from engine accessories and the A/C lines.
- Reconnect MAF Sensor and Battery: Plug the factory MAF electrical connector firmly into the sensor until it clicks. Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten it with a 10mm wrench.
- Initial Startup Protocol: Start the engine. DO NOT touch the gas pedal for at least 20 to 30 seconds. Allow the VQ40DE ECU to calibrate its idle air volume and baseline fuel trims smoothly. Check for any vacuum leaks or whistling around couplers before your test drive.
