DIY Guide: Cold Air Intake for Nissan Frontier (1999-2004) 3.3L Engine for 1999-2004 Nissan Frontier 3.3L
Required Tools
- 10mm & 8mm sockets with ratchet and extension
- Flathead screwdriver (for hose clamps)
- Slip-joint pliers (for factory spring clamps)
The VG33E/VG33ER rubber breather and vacuum hoses become brittle with age. Twist them gently with pliers to break the seal before pulling so you don’t crack the factory lines or plastic tees.
Phase 1: Factory Component Removal
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench.
- Unplug the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor harness. Release the spring clamps and pull the two large breather hoses and the small vacuum line off the factory corrugated intake boot.
- Loosen the hose clamp at the throttle body, unbolt the factory airbox assembly using a 10mm socket, and lift the entire stock intake tract out of the bay.
- Unbolt the factory MAF sensor housing from the stock airbox using a 10mm socket, keeping the bolts and gasket for reuse.
Phase 2: Aftermarket Installation
- Bolt the black four-bolt MAF adapter flange directly to the front of the factory MAF sensor housing, then clamp the blue cone air filter onto the adapter lip.
- Slide the straight silver aluminum mid-pipe with blue silicone couplers onto the throttle body and the rear of the MAF housing, aligning the three welded aluminum ports toward the engine.
- Push the two factory breather hoses and the small vacuum line onto the three welded ports on the aluminum tube, then secure all four worm-gear clamps with an 8mm socket or flathead screwdriver.
- Reconnect the MAF sensor electrical plug and the negative battery cable, then start the engine to verify smooth idle and zero vacuum leaks.
