Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The VQ35DE Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor screws are notoriously soft and tap directly into the factory plastic housing. If you use a worn-out screwdriver, they will strip instantly. Use a crisp Phillips #2 (or JIS #2) and press down firmly while turning. Furthermore, NEVER drop the MAF sensor. The hot-wire element is highly sensitive; a drop onto your driveway will shatter the resistor and throw your Altima straight into limp mode.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal on your 2007-2012 Nissan Altima 3.5L using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and protect the ECU.
  2. Remove the Fresh Air Scoop: Use your panel popper to carefully pry up the two plastic retaining clips holding the front air scoop to the radiator core support. Lift the scoop out of the engine bay and set it aside.
  3. Unplug the MAF Sensor: Depress the locking tab on the MAF sensor connector and pull straight back to unplug it. Unclip the wiring harness from the factory airbox so it doesn’t get snagged during removal.

  5. Extract the Factory Airbox: Remove the single bolt securing the upper airbox housing using a 10mm socket and extension. Firmly pull the upper airbox and tube off the throttle body. For the lower resonator box (the classic L32 chassis headache), you will need to firmly rock it back and forth to unseat it from the rubber grommets buried deep in the fender well. Pull it straight up and completely out of the vehicle.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Nissan Altima (2007-2012) 3.5L Engine

  1. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Carefully remove the two factory screws holding the MAF sensor into the OEM airbox using your Phillips #2 screwdriver. Gently pull the sensor straight out of the housing—do not twist it. Install the sensor into your new aftermarket intake pipe using the provided hardware. Tighten with your Phillips #2 screwdriver until just snug; do not over-tighten and crack the new pipe.
  2. Mount the Throttle Body Coupler: Slide the provided silicone coupler onto the factory throttle body. Slip two hose clamps over the coupler, then snug the throttle body side down with your 8mm socket. Do not crush the lip; just make it tight enough so the coupler cannot be rotated by hand.
  3. Position the New Intake Pipe: Carefully route the new Cold Air Intake pipe down into the engine bay, keeping it clear of the battery and wiring harnesses. Slide the top end of the pipe into the silicone coupler. Align the welded intake bracket with the factory mounting point and secure it with a 10mm socket.
  4. Button Up the Connections: Reconnect the PCV crankcase breather hose to the welded nipple on the new intake pipe, securing it with the factory clamp using your needle-nose pliers. Tighten down the remaining intake clamp at the throttle body coupler with your 8mm socket. Finally, plug the factory MAF harness back into the sensor until you hear an audible click.
  5. The ECU Relearn Protocol: Reinstall your air filter on the end of the intake pipe and tighten the clamp with an 8mm socket. Reconnect your negative battery terminal with a 10mm wrench. On the first startup, start the engine but do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. The 2007-2012 Nissan Altima 3.5L ECU requires this uninterrupted idle time to read the new, higher airflow volume and properly adjust the fuel trims without throwing a lean code.
