The Wrench Time for your 1995-1998 Nissan 200SX 1.6L 2.0L

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm socket and 12mm socket (with a 6-inch extension)
  • 10mm wrench (for the battery terminal)
  • 8mm socket or Phillips head screwdriver (for hose clamps)
  • Flathead screwdriver or Panel popper (for splash shield clips)
  • Pliers (for factory vacuum hose spring clamps)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
For the B14 chassis (both GA16 and SR20 engines), the universally agreed-upon headache is the massive, restrictive plastic resonator box shoved up in the driver’s side fender well. Don’t try to rip it out from the top; you’ll crack the 20-year-old brittle plastics or bend the inner fender. Drop the front section of the plastic wheel well liner to access the hidden 12mm bolts. Furthermore, treat the factory Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor like glass. Stripping the rusty factory MAF screws or dropping the housing will instantly throw a Check Engine Light and cause an erratic idle.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and protect the ECU.
  2. Unplug the MAF Sensor: Carefully depress the plastic tab on the MAF harness and pull straight back. Do not yank by the wires. Unclip the main airbox lid and remove the factory panel filter.
  3. Remove the Intake Tube: Use an 8mm socket or Phillips head screwdriver to loosen the hose clamp securing the rubber intake tube to the throttle body. Use pliers to pinch and slide back the spring clamps on the PCV vacuum lines, then pull the hoses free. Pull the main tube out of the engine bay.
  4. Extract the Lower Airbox: Remove the bolts holding the lower airbox tray to the chassis using a 10mm socket and pull the tray out completely.
  5. The Forum Fix (Resonator Delete): To properly clear the path for your 1995-1998 Nissan 200SX 1.6L 2.0L aftermarket intake, use a panel popper to remove the plastic push-clips holding the driver’s side wheel well splash shield. Pull the shield back to reveal the hidden resonator box. Use a 12mm socket on a 6-inch extension to unbolt and remove this restrictive factory plastic.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Nissan 200SX (1995-1998) 1.6L 2.0L Engines

  1. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Using a 10mm socket, carefully unbolt the MAF sensor housing from the factory airbox. Inspect the rubber O-ring or gasket. Transfer the MAF unit to your new Cold Air Intake piping, tightening the supplied hardware gently with a 10mm socket to avoid cracking the flange.
  2. Mount the Silicone Couplers: Slide the provided silicone coupler over your throttle body. Secure it loosely using the provided T-bolt or worm-gear clamp and an 8mm socket.
  3. Route the New Piping: Feed the new intake pipe down through the engine bay into the newly emptied space in the fender well where the resonator used to sit. Push the top end into the throttle body coupler. Align the welded bracket to the factory chassis mounting point and secure it with a 10mm socket.
  4. Filter and Vacuum Connections: Attach the high-flow air filter to the end of the pipe in the fender well, securing it tightly with an 8mm socket. Reconnect your factory PCV vacuum lines to the new intake nipples using your pliers. Plug the MAF sensor harness back in. Go back over all clamps and brackets to ensure they are fully tightened.
  5. The ECU Learn Procedure: Reconnect the negative battery terminal using your 10mm wrench. Turn the key to start the car. Do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. Let the B14’s computer read the new, higher airflow from the MAF and adjust the fuel trims and idle parameters naturally.
