Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The 4G94 engine in the CS6A chassis uses a sensitive Karman Vortex Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor housed inside the factory airbox lid. Never poke, spray harsh solvent, or drop this sensor. When bolting the aftermarket MAF adapter plate to the factory sensor body, hand-thread all four bolts first before torquing to prevent cross-threading the soft cast-aluminum housing, and ensure the rubber O-ring seal sits completely flat to prevent unmetered false-air leaks.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Airbox on the 2002-2007 Mitsubishi Lancer 2.0L

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench. This resets ECU fuel trims and prevents electrical shorts or accidental check engine lights.
  2. Unplug the MAF Sensor: Depress the locking tab on the MAF harness connector located at the top of the airbox. Gently slide the connector off the sensor. If the plastic is heat-brittle, use a flathead screwdriver to gently lift the release clip without snapping it.
  3. Disconnect Breather & Throttle Body Tube: Using pliers, squeeze and slide back the spring clamp securing the valve cover breather hose to the intake tube. Loosen the factory hose clamp at the throttle body using a flathead screwdriver or 8mm nut driver, then pull the rubber accordion tube off the throttle body.
  4. Remove OEM Airbox Assembly: Unbolt the two airbox hold-down bolts from the inner fender/frame rail using a 10mm socket and 6-inch ratchet extension. Pull the complete upper and lower airbox assembly out of the engine bay.
  5. Separate the MAF Sensor: Unbolt the four factory bolts securing the MAF sensor housing to the OEM airbox lid using a 10mm socket. Carefully set the MAF sensor and its rubber gasket aside on a clean rag.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Mitsubishi Lancer (2002-2007) 2.0L Engine

  1. Assemble MAF Adapter: Bolt the aftermarket intake adapter plate to the factory Mitsubishi MAF housing using the supplied hardware, ensuring the rubber seal is seated firmly in its groove. Tighten down evenly in a cross-pattern using a 10mm wrench or appropriate hex key.
  2. Mount Throttle Body Coupler: Slide the silicone straight or reducer coupler onto the 2002-2007 Mitsubishi Lancer 2.0L throttle body. Slide two hose clamps into position and tighten only the throttle body side using an 8mm nut driver.
  3. Position Intake Pipe & Bracket: Insert the new aluminum intake tube into the throttle body coupler. Align the welded mounting bracket to the factory chassis ground or airbox mounting point.   5. ECU Idle Relearn: Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench. Start the engine, but DO NOT touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. Allow the 4G94 ECU to establish a baseline idle and adjust to the increased airflow volume before revving or test driving.
