Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The 8G Galant community on TGC knows this pain well: the factory Mitsubishi Karman Vortex MAS (Mass Airflow Sensor) has a highly delicate internal honeycomb screen. DO NOT poke it, push on it, or try to wipe it clean. If you damage that honeycomb during the transfer, your 4G64 or 6G72 will suffer from massive idle surge and stalling. Also, pre-soak the 10mm radiator support bolts holding the factory air snorkel with penetrating fluid—they love to snap after 20 years of heat cycling.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and safeguard the ECU.
  2. Unplug the MAS: Carefully depress the plastic tab on the Mass Airflow Sensor wiring harness and pull straight back to unplug it. Tuck the wire out of the way.
  3. Disconnect the Vacuum Lines: Using your pliers, squeeze the factory spring clamps and slide them backward down the hoses. Gently twist and pull the rubber breather hoses off the factory intake tube. Be gentle; the 20-year-old plastic nipples on the OEM tube are brittle and will snap if forced.
  4. Loosen the Throttle Body Clamp: Use your flathead screwdriver to loosen the large hose clamp securing the factory rubber intake hose to the throttle body.
  5. Extract the Factory Airbox: Using your 10mm socket and 12mm socket on a 6-inch extension, remove the mounting bolts holding the lower airbox and front snorkel to the chassis. Lift the entire bulky assembly out of your 1999-2003 Mitsubishi Galant 2.4L 3.0L engine bay.
  6. Salvage the MAS: Using a 10mm socket, unbolt the factory mass airflow sensor from the OEM airbox housing. Set it in a safe, clean location where it won’t roll off the bench.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Mitsubishi Galant (1999-2003) 2.4L 3.0L

  1. Prep the MAS Adapter: Bolt your factory mass airflow sensor to the new cold air intake pipe or adapter plate using the provided hardware and a 10mm socket. Double-check that the directional airflow arrow stamped on the sensor is pointing toward the throttle body.
  2. Install the Throttle Body Coupler: Slide the provided silicone coupler over the throttle body. Slide two hose clamps over the coupler, and tighten the inner clamp down snug using your 8mm nut driver.

  4. Reconnect Hoses and Wiring: Push your factory vacuum and breather hoses onto the new intake tube’s welded aluminum fittings. Secure them with the factory spring clamps using your pliers. Plug the MAS wiring harness back into the sensor until you hear a solid click.
  5. Mount the Filter: Slide the new high-flow pod filter onto the end of the cold air intake pipe and tighten the clamp with your 8mm nut driver. Verify the filter isn’t rubbing against the chassis or lower plastics to prevent wear holes.
  6. The ECU Relearn Startup: Reconnect the negative battery terminal with your 10mm wrench. Turn the key and start the engine. CRITICAL: Do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. Allow the ECU to adjust to the new, higher volume of airflow and establish a steady idle.
