Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The 4G69 engine in the 2006-2011 Eclipse uses a sensitive Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor housed in the upper airbox. The harness clip becomes brittle over time due to under-hood heat cycles. Push down firmly on the center release tab and pull purely from the connector housing—never pull on the wires. When transferring the sensor to the new intake pipe, ensure the factory rubber O-ring is fully intact and seated squarely; an improperly seated O-ring will create an unmetered air leak and trigger an immediate P0171 lean code.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Loosen the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench and isolate the cable away from the post to clear the ECU memory and prevent accidental electrical faults.
  2. Disconnect the MAF Sensor: Press the locking tab on the MAF electrical connector and slide it free. Using a #2 Phillips screwdriver, back out the two factory screws retaining the MAF sensor to the OEM airbox housing. Carefully pull the sensor straight out and set it aside in a clean, safe area.
  3. Remove the Breather Hose: Use slip-joint pliers to squeeze the spring clamp on the crankcase breather/PCV hose at the factory rubber intake duct, then slide the hose off the plastic nipple.
  4. Loosen the Throttle Body Clamp: Loosen the factory hose clamp securing the intake bellows to the throttle body using an 8mm nut driver or flat-blade screwdriver.
  5. Unbolt and Remove the OEM Airbox: Remove the factory airbox mounting bolts from the chassis tray using a 10mm socket with an extension. Disengage the air intake snorkel from the front core support and lift the entire OEM intake and filter assembly out of the engine bay.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Mitsubishi Eclipse (2006-2011) 2.4L

  1. Install Throttle Body Coupler: Slide the silicone transition coupler onto the throttle body mouth. Secure the throttle body side using an 8mm nut driver, leaving the outer clamp slightly loose for pipe adjustment.
  2. Transfer the Factory MAF Sensor: Insert the OEM MAF sensor into the CNC-machined adapter plate on your new intake tube, verifying the rubber O-ring creates an airtight seal. Secure the sensor using the supplied hardware and a #2 Phillips screwdriver or hex key, taking care not to over-torque into aluminum threads.
  3. Mount the Intake Pipe and Vibration Isolator: Secure the rubber vibration mount to the factory airbox mounting point using a 10mm socket. Guide the new intake tube into the throttle body silicone coupler and align the mounting bracket with the rubber stud. Fasten loosely with the provided washer and nut using a 10mm socket.
  4. Attach Breather Line and Air Filter: Connect the factory crankcase breather hose onto the intake tube’s welded vacuum port and secure it with the clamp using slip-joint pliers. Install the cone air filter onto the end of the intake tube, adjusting clearance away from the chassis and wiring, then tighten the clamp firmly with an 8mm nut driver.
  5. Lock Down Clamps and Reconnect Electronics: Fully tighten all remaining hose clamps using an 8mm nut driver. Snap the electrical harness connector back onto the MAF sensor until it audibly clicks. Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.
  6. ECU Calibration Startup: Turn the ignition to the ON position for 5 seconds, then crank the engine. Do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds during the initial idle cycle to allow the Mitsubishi 4G69 ECU to properly relearn its baseline idle air trim with the increased airflow.
