The Stock RX-8 Airflow Restriction

The factory SE3P intake tract was engineered with multiple resonators and baffles primarily designed to minimize induction noise rather than maximize flow. These internal obstructions create significant turbulence, disrupting the laminar airflow required by the high-revving Renesis rotary engine. Over time, the OEM plastic components become brittle from engine bay heat, leading to potential vacuum leaks. Additionally, the stock airbox is highly susceptible to heat soak during aggressive driving, which causes the ECU to retard ignition timing as IATs (Intake Air Temperatures) climb, resulting in a noticeable loss of power at the top of the 13B-MSP’s power band.

The Engineering Solution

This intake system features high-grade T6061 aluminum piping with a 3.5-inch diameter, providing a significantly larger and smoother cross-sectional area for incoming air. By utilizing mandrel-bent aluminum instead of corrugated plastic, internal drag is minimized, allowing the twin-rotor engine to breathe more freely. The kit includes a high-flow cone filter and four distinct aluminum pipe sections designed to navigate the tight tolerances of the RX-8 engine bay while maintaining high air velocity. Heavy-duty silicone couplers are provided to ensure airtight seals and to dampen engine vibrations that could otherwise stress the intake tract. The result is improved throttle response and a more aggressive induction note during high-RPM port opening.
