Ever feel like your Mazda B4000 is working harder than it needs to, especially climbing a grade or passing? That sluggish feeling from the factory intake holding back your truck’s potential can be genuinely frustrating.

Performance Cold Air Intake for Mazda B4000 (4.0L V6)

The stock intake system on your Mazda B4000 was designed with compromise in mind – primarily quiet operation and low manufacturing cost, not peak performance. This often means a convoluted air path, restrictive baffling, and drawing in warmer air from the engine bay, all of which choke your 4.0L V6, leading to lackluster throttle response and reduced power output when you really need it.

This Cold Air Intake system is engineered to solve those limitations by completely replacing the inefficient factory airbox and intake tube. By providing a direct, smooth, and wider path for airflow, it allows your engine to breathe freely and draw in colder, denser air from outside the engine bay. The result is a more efficient combustion process, translating directly into tangible gains in horsepower, torque, and a far more responsive, enjoyable driving experience.

Why You Need This Upgrade

  • Significant Power & Torque Boost: Experience a noticeable bump in both horsepower and low-end torque. You’ll feel the difference when accelerating from a stop, merging onto the highway, or hauling a load, thanks to optimized airflow and a denser air charge getting to your combustion chambers.
  • Sharper Throttle Response: Say goodbye to that momentary lag. By eliminating the stock system’s restrictions, this intake provides an immediate connection between your foot and the engine, making your B4000 feel more agile and eager to rev.
  • Improved Engine Breathing & Sound: Crafted from lightweight, durable T-304 aluminum, this system ensures maximum airflow efficiency and rapid heat dissipation. You’ll also appreciate a deeper, more aggressive growl from your 4.0L V6, giving it the character it deserves.

Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time

  • Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
  • Difficulty: 3/10 - A straightforward bolt-on, but requires care when handling the delicate factory electronics.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm socket, extension, and ratchet
  • 8mm socket or nut driver
  • T20 Security Torx bit (Tamper-proof Torx)
  • Panel popper or flathead screwdriver
  • MAF Sensor Cleaner (Recommended while everything is apart)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The 4.0L SOHC shared by the Ranger and B-Series is notorious for its brittle factory plastics. The accordion intake tube frequently cracks in the ribs, throwing P0171/P0174 lean codes from unmetered air. Worse, Mazda/Ford locked the factory Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor down with tamper-proof security Torx screws. Don’t try to force a regular Allen key or flathead in there; you’ll strip the head and ruin a $100 sensor. Buy or borrow the correct T20 Security Torx bit before you start wrenching.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and reset the ECU for the new airflow parameters on your 2001-2003 Mazda B4000 4.0L.
  2. Unplug the Sensors: Disconnect the MAF sensor harness and the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor. Use a panel popper to gently pry the wiring harness retaining clips out of the plastic airbox without snapping the brittle factory tabs.
  3. Loosen the Clamps: Take your 8mm socket and loosen the factory hose clamp securing the intake tube to the throttle body. Pull the factory PCV breather hose directly off the side of the main intake tube.
  4. Extract the Upper Assembly: Unclip the metal retaining latches on the upper airbox lid. Pull the entire accordion tube and airbox lid out of the engine bay as one unit.
  5. Remove the Lower Airbox: Unbolt the factory lower airbox tray mounts using a 10mm socket and extension. Pull firmly upwards to pop the tray out of its rubber mounting grommets (a quick spray of WD-40 helps if the 20-year-old rubber is seized).

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Mazda B4000 (2001-2003) 4.0L Engine - Red

  1. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Carefully remove the MAF from the factory housing using your T20 Security Torx bit. Treat this sensor like fragile glass—do not touch the exposed internal resistor wires. Spray it with dedicated MAF cleaner, let it dry completely, and install it into your new intake tube using the supplied hardware.
  2. Mount the Heat Shield: Assemble the new heat shield panels and bolt the assembly into the factory lower airbox location using your 10mm socket and the provided brackets.
  3. Install the Tube and Couplers: Slide the provided silicone coupler over the throttle body and push the new red intake tube into place. Slide the included hose clamps into position and lightly snug them with an 8mm socket.
  4. Reconnect the Plumbing: Reconnect the factory PCV breather hose to the welded port on the new intake tube. Plug your MAF and IAT sensor wiring harnesses back in until you feel a solid "click."
  5. Secure the Filter: Attach the high-flow red air filter to the end of the intake tube inside the heat shield. Tighten down the final filter clamp and all coupler clamps firmly with an 8mm nut driver.
  6. First Startup Protocol: Reconnect the negative battery terminal with your 10mm wrench. Start the vehicle, but do not touch the gas pedal for 20 seconds. Allow the engine to idle untouched so the ECU can adapt its fuel trims to the increased air volume.
