Feeling your Mazda 6’s 2.5L engine gasping for air is frustrating, especially when you crave a more responsive and powerful drive. Unlock its true potential with this cold air intake, delivering immediate throttle response and a satisfying surge of power.

Performance Cold Air Intake for Mazda 6 (2.5L Skyactiv-G)

The factory intake system on your Mazda 6 2.5L is engineered primarily for noise suppression, not peak performance. Its restrictive design and convoluted air pathways create significant bottlenecks, severely limiting the volume and velocity of vital cool air reaching your engine and robbing you of power.

This high-performance cold air intake directly addresses these limitations. Featuring a mandrel-bent T-304 aluminum induction pipe and a robust thermal heat shield, it channels a consistent, high volume of cooler, denser, oxygen-rich air directly into your engine. This optimization eliminates intake lag, sharpens throttle response, and unlocks measurable gains in horsepower and torque across the entire RPM band.

Why You Need This Upgrade

  • Increased Horsepower & Torque: Experience noticeable gains in engine output, translating to stronger acceleration and improved passing power.
  • Improved Fuel Efficiency: A more efficient air-to-fuel mixture can lead to better combustion and potentially enhanced fuel economy under various driving conditions.
  • Sharper Throttle Response: Eliminate restrictive airflow bottlenecks, reducing intake lag for immediate and decisive acceleration.
  • Enhanced Engine Note: Enjoy a deeper, more aggressive induction sound that truly reflects your engine’s newfound performance without being overly intrusive.
  • Optimized Airflow Consistency: Engineered for steady, laminar airflow, ensuring consistent engine performance and reliability even under demanding conditions.
  • Superior Filtration & Air Quality: A high-flow, reusable air filter traps harmful contaminants while maximizing clean air delivery to your engine for longevity and peak operation.

Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time

  • Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
  • Difficulty: 3/10 - Basic bolt-on, but requires handling the sensitive Skyactiv Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor with extreme care.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm Socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet
  • 8mm Socket or flathead screwdriver (for hose clamps)
  • #2 Phillips Head Screwdriver (for the factory MAF sensor)
  • Needle-Nose Pliers (for the factory breather hose clamps)
  • Panel Popper Tool (for releasing wiring harness clips)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The 2.5L Skyactiv engines are notorious for brittle plastic PCV breather hose fittings on the factory accordion tube. Do not yank the hose off. Gently twist and pull after releasing the clamp to avoid snapping the nipple. Furthermore, the MAF sensor screws strip easily—make sure you use a true #2 Phillips and apply firm downward pressure when breaking them loose. NEVER touch the amber bulb on the MAF sensor with your bare hands, or you will cause an immediate Check Engine Light (CEL).

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal on your 2014-2021 Mazda 6 2.5L using a 10mm wrench or socket to prevent electrical shorts and reset the ECU learning parameters.
  2. Unplug the MAF Sensor: Locate the MAF sensor on the factory airbox. Slide the red locking tab back, press down on the release clip, and pull the harness plug free. Use a panel popper to unclip the wire harness tethered to the side of the airbox.
  3. Remove the PCV Breather Hose: Using needle-nose pliers, squeeze the spring clamp on the breather hose connected to the factory intake tube and slide it back. Carefully wiggle and pull the rubber hose off the plastic nipple.
  4. Loosen the Throttle Body Clamp: Grab your 8mm socket and loosen the hose clamp securing the factory intake tube to the throttle body.
  5. Extract the Factory Airbox: Use a 10mm socket to remove the mounting bolts holding the lower airbox tray to the chassis. Once unbolted, pull the entire factory intake assembly firmly upward to pop it out of its lower rubber mounting grommets and remove it from the engine bay.
  6. Salvage the MAF Sensor: Place the factory box on a clean workbench. Use a #2 Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws holding the MAF sensor. Gently pull the sensor straight out. Set it in a safe, clean spot where it won’t be bumped.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Mazda 6 (2014-2021) 2.5L Engine Blue

  1. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Carefully slide the factory MAF sensor into the machined port on your new blue intake tube. Ensure the O-ring seats flush. Secure the sensor using the supplied aftermarket hardware (usually requiring a 3mm or 4mm Allen wrench). Do not overtighten, or you will crack the mounting flange.
  2. Mount the Silicone Coupler: Push the supplied silicone coupler over the throttle body. Slip two hose clamps over the coupler, but leave them loose.
  3. Drop in the Heat Shield (If equipped): If your kit includes a lower heat shield or airbox, seat it into the factory lower grommets and bolt it down using your 10mm socket and the factory mounting points.
  4. Install the Blue Intake Tube: Slide the new intake tube into the throttle body coupler. Attach the high-flow air filter to the end of the tube and snug the filter clamp down with an 8mm socket.
  5. Lock It Down and Plumb It: Position the tube so it does not rub against the battery or brake master cylinder lines. Tighten both throttle body hose clamps with your 8mm socket. Push the factory PCV breather hose onto the new intake nipple and secure it with the spring clamp using needle-nose pliers. Plug the MAF sensor harness back in until it clicks, and engage the red locking tab.
  6. The ECU Relearn Protocol: Reconnect the negative battery terminal with your 10mm wrench. Start the engine. Do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. Let the Skyactiv ECU idle and adjust its short-term fuel trims to compensate for the denser, higher volume of cold air.
