Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The Skyactiv MAF (Mass Airflow) sensor is notoriously sensitive to dirt and oils, and the factory vacuum lines get incredibly brittle after a few heat cycles. Don’t touch the MAF sensor’s exposed element, and use gentle, twisting motions when pulling the factory breather hose off the plastic nipple so you don’t snap it.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and allow the ECU to reset its fuel trims for the new airflow.
  2. Unplug the MAF Sensor: Slide the red locking tab back on the MAF sensor harness, press the clip, and pull straight up. Use your panel popper to pry the wiring harness anchor clips out of the factory airbox so the wire hangs free.
  3. Extract the MAF Sensor: Using your precision Phillips screwdriver, carefully back out the two small screws holding the MAF sensor in place. Pull the sensor straight out, place it in a clean Ziploc bag, and set it aside safely.
  4. Disconnect the Breather Hose: Take your slip-joint pliers, squeeze the spring clamp on the factory breather hose attached to the intake tube, and slide it back. Gently twist and pull the rubber hose off the plastic nipple.
  5. Remove the Factory Airbox and Resonator: Use your 8mm socket to loosen the hose clamp connecting the intake tube to the throttle body. Next, use your 10mm deep socket and extension to remove the bolts anchoring the lower airbox to the chassis. Grab the entire assembly firmly and pull straight up to pop it out of the rubber mounting grommets.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Mazda 6 (2014-2021) 2.5L Engine Black

  1. Mount the Heat Shield: Drop the aftermarket heat shield into the space where the factory box sat. Align the mounting tabs with the OEM grommet locations and secure it using your 10mm socket and the provided hardware.
  2. Install the Throttle Body Coupler: Slide the provided silicone coupler over the throttle body. Slide two hose clamps onto the coupler, then use your 8mm socket to tighten the clamp directly on the throttle body until snug. Leave the outer clamp loose.
  3. Seat the Intake Tube: Guide the new black intake tube through the heat shield and push it firmly into the silicone coupler. Once aligned, tighten down the outer clamp with your 8mm socket. Reconnect the factory breather hose to the welded nipple on the new tube and secure it with the OEM spring clamp using your pliers.
  4. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Carefully retrieve your MAF sensor and insert it into the precision-machined slot on the new intake tube. Secure it using the provided Allen or Phillips hardware (do not overtighten and crack the plastic flange). Plug the factory wiring harness back in and lock the red tab.
  5. Mount the Filter and Initialize: Slide the black high-flow air filter onto the end of the intake tube inside the heat shield. Tighten the filter clamp with your 8mm socket. Reconnect your negative battery terminal with the 10mm wrench. Start the vehicle, but DO NOT touch the gas pedal for 20 seconds so the ECU can properly adjust the idle fuel trims to the increased air volume.
