The Wrench Time

Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
Welcome to the 2IS chassis, where under-hood plastics are notoriously brittle. The factory push-clips holding your engine covers and intake snorkel will likely shatter if forced. Take your time with a panel popper. More importantly: The factory Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor O-ring on the 4GR-FSE and 2GR-FSE engines likes to swell. If you pinch or tear this O-ring when transferring it to the new intake pipe, your Lexus will immediately throw a P0171/P0174 Lean Code and suffer from erratic idling. Always lubricate the O-ring with a single drop of clean engine oil before seating it.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and protect the ECU.
  2. Remove the Engine Bay Plastics: Use your panel popper tool to carefully extract the retaining clips holding the passenger-side engine cover and the front air scoop. Set the covers and clips aside.
  3. Disconnect the MAF Sensor: Gently press the release tab and unplug the factory MAF sensor harness. Unclip the wiring loom anchored to the side of the OEM airbox so the wires hang free.
  4. Remove Vacuum and PCV Lines: Use pliers to squeeze the factory spring clamps and slide them backward down the hoses. Pull the crankcase vent hose and the smaller vacuum line off the factory intake tube.
  5. Extract the Factory Airbox: Loosen the primary hose clamp at the throttle body using a 10mm socket or Phillips screwdriver. Remove the three mounting bolts securing the lower airbox to the chassis with a 10mm socket and an extension, then lift the entire OEM assembly out of the 2005-2013 Lexus IS 2.5L 3.5L engine bay.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake

  1. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Remove the two screws holding the MAF sensor to the factory airbox using a Phillips screwdriver. Gently pull the sensor out. Apply a single drop of clean oil to the O-ring, and carefully press it straight down into the machined pad on your new Cold Air Intake pipe. Secure it using the provided aftermarket hardware (typically requiring a 4mm Allen wrench). Do not overtighten, or you will crack the plastic sensor flange.
  2. Install the Heat Shield: Drop the new aftermarket heat shield or lower airbox into the factory chassis mounting points. Secure it down using your 10mm socket and the factory bolts.
  3. Mount the Silicone Couplers: Slide the supplied silicone coupler over the throttle body and place the T-bolt or worm-gear clamps loosely over the ends. Slide the new Cold Air Intake pipe into the coupler.
  4. Connect Lines and Filter: Reconnect the PCV and vacuum hoses to the welded nipples on the new intake pipe. Secure the high-flow air filter to the end of the pipe inside the heat shield. Check your clearances, then tighten all clamps down firmly with an 8mm socket or 10mm socket.
  5. ECU Relearn Protocol: Plug the MAF sensor harness back into the sensor until it clicks. Reconnect the negative battery terminal with your 10mm wrench. On the very first startup, do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. Let the vehicle idle so the ECU can calibrate its fuel trims to the increased airflow volume of your newly upgraded 2005-2013 Lexus IS.
