Ignite Your Drive: Performance Cold Air Intake for Hyundai & KIA Gamma II & Nu L4 Engines

Who It’s For: Designed specifically for Hyundai Accent, Veloster (Non-Turbo), Elantra, and KIA Rio owners running the energetic Gamma II (1.6L) and Nu (1.8L) L4 engine families. If you’re looking to wake up your compact daily driver or add a little extra pep to your highway merges, this is your next essential upgrade.

The Problem: Here’s the deal with most factory intake systems on these Gamma II and Nu engines: they’re engineered for silence, not speed. The stock airbox and convoluted plastic piping are notorious for restricting airflow, causing turbulence, and leading to higher intake air temperatures. This chokes your engine’s ability to breathe freely, especially when you ask for power, resulting in a noticeable lack of throttle response and leaving a good chunk of factory horsepower on the table. It’s like trying to run a marathon while breathing through a straw.

The Solution: We’ve engineered this Cold Air Intake system to be the direct counter to those factory limitations. By swapping out the restrictive OEM components for a precision-bent, lightweight T-304 aluminum induction pipe and a high-flow, performance air filter, we’re optimizing every aspect of your engine’s respiration. This setup delivers a cooler, denser charge of oxygen-rich air directly to your Gamma II or Nu engine, reducing turbulence and improving combustion efficiency. The result is a sharper throttle, a more responsive engine, and the tangible gains in horsepower and torque you’ve been craving from your 1.6L or 1.8L.

Why This is the Ultimate Upgrade

  • Enhanced Power Output: Experience a noticeable increase in both horsepower and torque, up to 10%, giving your Gamma II or Nu engine improved acceleration and a more lively feel throughout the RPM range.
  • Premium, Lightweight Construction: Crafted from durable T-304 aluminum piping, this intake not only looks great under the hood but also efficiently dissipates heat, ensuring your engine always receives the coolest, densest air charge possible.
  • Instant Throttle Response: Say goodbye to lag. Our streamlined design reduces airflow restrictions, creating a direct, immediate connection between your foot on the pedal and your engine’s reaction.
  • Aggressive Induction Sound: Let your 4-cylinder sing. This intake replaces the muffled factory sound with a more pronounced, aggressive induction note under heavy acceleration, adding to the overall driving experience.
  • Optimized & Consistent Airflow: Engineered for steady air velocity, this system ensures reliable performance in diverse driving conditions, keeping your engine running strong whether you’re commuting or enjoying a spirited drive.
  • Superior Filtration: Equipped with a high-flow, reusable air filter, your engine is protected from harmful contaminants while allowing maximum airflow for the demands of these modern, high-revving engines.

Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time

  • Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
  • Difficulty: 3/10 - Basic hand tools, but you will need to negotiate with the factory lower resonator box hidden in the fender well.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm and 12mm deep sockets with a 3/8" drive ratchet and a 6" extension
  • Phillips and Flathead screwdrivers
  • Plastic panel popper tool (crucial for fender liner push-pins)
  • Needle-nose pliers (for annoying factory spring clamps)
  • T20 Torx bit or Allen keys (for transferring factory sensors)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
On these 1.6L Gamma GDI and 1.8L Nu engines, the community agrees on two massive headaches: the brittle PCV breather hose and the restrictive factory "silencer" resonator. The factory PCV hose practically bakes onto the plastic intake tube. Do not yank it blindly, or you will snap the plastic valve cover nipple! Use a pick tool to gently break the rubber seal first. Also, to get true cold air, you must yank out that lower factory resonator box buried behind the driver’s side bumper cover.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part from your 2011-2013 Hyundai Kia Accent Elantra Veloster Rio 1.6L 1.8L

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and protect the ECU.
  2. Unplug the MAP/IAT Sensor: Locate the sensor plugged into the factory intake tube. Depress the plastic locking tab and pull gently. Tuck the harness out of the way.
  3. Disconnect the PCV Breather: Grab your needle-nose pliers, squeeze the spring clamp on the PCV hose attached to the intake, and slide it back. Twist the hose gently to break it free without snapping the plastic fitting.
  4. Loosen the Throttle Body Clamp: Use a Phillips screwdriver or a 10mm socket to back off the tension on the factory hose clamp securing the intake tube to the throttle body.
  5. Remove the Upper Airbox: Unbolt the top airbox using a 10mm socket and extension. Lift the upper assembly out of the engine bay.
  6. Extract the Hidden Resonator: Turn your steering wheel all the way to the right. Use your panel popper to remove the push-pins holding the front driver’s side fender liner. Peel the liner back to expose the massive factory lower resonator box. Unbolt it using a 10mm socket and wriggle it out.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake

  1. Transfer the Sensor: Carefully remove the factory MAP/IAT sensor from the OEM plastic tube. Install it into the billet port on your new cold air pipe using a T20 Torx bit or the provided Allen bolts. Do not over-tighten! You are threading into aluminum, and the sensor housing is delicate plastic.
  2. Install the Throttle Body Coupler: Slide the provided silicone coupler over the throttle body. Slide two hose clamps over the coupler, then tighten down the throttle body side using an 8mm socket or flathead screwdriver. Leave the intake-side clamp loose for now.
  3. Route the New Piping: Snake the new cold air tube down into the fender cavity where the old resonator lived. Insert the top end of the pipe into the throttle body coupler.
  4. Secure the Bracket and PCV: Line up the welded bracket on the pipe with the factory rubber isolation mount. Secure it using a 10mm socket. Slide the factory PCV hose onto the new intake barb and secure it with the factory spring clamp using your pliers.
  5. Mount the Cone Filter: Reach behind the pulled-back fender liner. Slide the high-flow cone filter onto the bottom of the pipe and lock it down tight with an 8mm socket. Reinstall your fender liner push-pins.
  6. Tighten Down and Relearn: Tighten the remaining hose clamp at the throttle body. Reconnect your MAP/IAT sensor harness. Finally, reconnect the negative battery terminal. Start the engine, but do not touch the gas pedal for 20 seconds so the ECU can properly recalibrate to the increased airflow.
