  • Difficulty: 3/10 - A very straightforward bolt-on upgrade, but maneuvering the factory lower intake resonator out of the engine bay takes some patience.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm socket and 12mm socket with a 6-inch extension (1/4-inch or 3/8-inch drive)
  • 8mm socket or nut driver (for the new hose clamps)
  • #2 Phillips screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers (for factory hose spring-clips)
  • Panel popper tool or flathead screwdriver (for plastic retaining clips)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The KDM community universally agrees on two major headaches when wrenching on the "Gamma" 1.6L GDI engine. First, the factory lower air resonator (the "snorkus") is tightly wedged behind the bumper. There is a hidden 10mm bolt tucked deep down; do not just yank the plastic housing or you will shatter it. Second, the factory PCV breather hose connecting to the intake tube gets incredibly brittle from heat soak. Use your pliers to release the clamp, and gently twist the hose back and forth to break the seal. If you bend it aggressively, you will snap the plastic nipple clean off!

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights while we work on your 2012-2015 Hyundai Kia Accent Veloster Rio 1.6L.
  2. Remove the Factory Air Scoop: Locate the plastic front air scoop above the radiator. Use your panel popper tool to pry up the center pins of the two plastic retaining clips, then pull the entire clip out. Lift the scoop away.
  3. Disconnect the PCV Breather: Take your needle-nose pliers and squeeze the spring clamp holding the PCV breather hose to the factory rubber intake tube. Slide the clamp back, gently twist the hose to break the seal, and pull it off.
  4. Loosen the Intake Clamps: Use a 10mm socket or #2 Phillips screwdriver to loosen the hose clamp securing the factory intake tube to the throttle body.
  5. Unbolt the Factory Airbox: Grab your 10mm socket with an extension and remove the three bolts holding the main upper airbox assembly to the chassis. Lift the upper airbox and filter straight up and out.
  6. Extract the Lower Resonator: Locate the final hidden 10mm bolt holding the lower resonator box in the fender well area. Remove this bolt, then firmly but carefully wiggle and pull the lower "snorkus" out of the engine bay.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Kia Rio / Hyundai Accent & Veloster (2012-2015) 1.6L Engine

  1. Mount the Silicone Coupler: Slide the provided silicone reducer coupler onto the engine’s throttle body. Slip a hose clamp over it and tighten it down snugly using your 8mm socket.
  2. Install the Intake Pipe: Guide the new metal intake pipe into the engine bay and insert the top end into the silicone coupler. Do not fully tighten the second hose clamp just yet so you have room to adjust the angle.
  3. Secure the Bracket: Line up the welded bracket on the new intake pipe with the factory airbox mounting hole on the chassis. Thread the provided bolt (or reuse the factory hardware) and tighten it down with a 10mm socket or 12mm socket (depending on supplied hardware).
  4. Transfer the Breather Hose: Slide the factory PCV breather hose onto the welded nipple of your new intake pipe. Secure it by sliding the factory spring clamp back into place with your pliers. This keeps the engine’s vacuum sealed so the MAP sensor doesn’t throw a lean code.
  5. Mount the High-Flow Filter: Slide the new cone filter onto the end of the intake pipe. Adjust the angle of the pipe so the filter doesn’t rub against any metal chassis parts, then tighten all remaining hose clamps down firmly with your 8mm socket.
  6. The ECU Relearn Procedure: Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten it with a 10mm wrench. Start the vehicle. Do not touch the gas pedal for 20 seconds. Let the car idle so the ECU can calibrate to the massive increase in airflow and adjust fuel trims accordingly.
