Tools You Will Need
- 10mm deep socket and ratchet (for battery and airbox mounting bolts)
- 8mm socket or nut driver (for hose clamps)
- Small flathead screwdriver (for releasing wire harness clips)
- Silicone spray lubricant or soapy water (critical for seating the sensor safely)
- Panel popper tool (optional, for stubborn retaining clips)
The biggest headache universally agreed upon in the KJ/KK platform forums for the 2004-2009 Jeep Liberty 3.7L is the factory PCV/CCV breather hose. Due to years of trapped underhood heat, this corrugated plastic hose becomes incredibly brittle and will snap if you bend it. Treat it like glass during removal. Additionally, the 3.7L uses a speed-density system with an Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor pushed into the factory tube. The plastic locking tabs on this sensor are notorious for snapping. Do not muscle it out; carefully twist and pry.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench or socket to prevent check engine lights and to force the ECU to reset its airflow learned values on your 2004-2009 Jeep Liberty 3.7L.
- Unplug the IAT Sensor: Locate the Intake Air Temperature sensor plugged into the side of the factory intake tube. Depress the locking tab with your small flathead screwdriver and pull the harness free. Do not pull by the wires.
- Extract the Factory IAT Sensor: Carefully twist the IAT sensor counter-clockwise and gently pull it out of the factory rubber grommet. Set this aside in a safe location so the fragile thermistor tip isn’t damaged.
- Remove the Breather Hose: Carefully detach the brittle factory crankcase breather hose running from the oil filler neck area to the factory resonator box. Gently twist the fitting to break the seal rather than pulling straight back.
- Loosen the Throttle Body Clamp: Take your 8mm socket and loosen the factory worm-gear clamp securing the large corrugated intake tube to the throttle body.
- Pull the Factory Airbox: Remove the 10mm bolts securing the lower airbox to the inner fender well. Grab the entire bulky resonator and airbox assembly and pull straight up to pop it out of its lower mounting grommets. Remove it from the engine bay.
Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Jeep Liberty (2004-2009) 3.7L Engine - Blue
- Prep the New Intake Tube: Press the supplied thick rubber grommet into the pre-drilled hole on your new blue intake pipe. Apply a quick spray of silicone spray lubricant to the O-ring of your factory IAT sensor. Gently push and twist the sensor into the new grommet until it is fully seated. Never force it.
- Mount the Silicone Coupler: Slide the provided silicone transition coupler onto your throttle body. Slip two provided hose clamps loosely over the coupler.
- Position the Intake Pipe: Guide the new blue aluminum pipe into the engine bay, sliding the top end into the throttle body coupler. Line up the pipe’s welded mounting bracket with the factory airbox mounting point on the fender well. Secure the bracket using a 10mm socket and the provided hardware.
- Secure the Clamps and Filter: Adjust the pipe so it isn’t rubbing on any metal surfaces. Tighten down both clamps at the throttle body using your 8mm socket. Slide the blue high-flow cone filter onto the end of the intake pipe and lock it down firmly with your 8mm socket.
- Connect the New Breather Line: Attach the provided flexible silicone breather hose from the engine CCV port to the welded nipple on your new intake pipe, completely bypassing the forum-dreaded brittle factory plastic hose. Reconnect the IAT sensor wiring harness until it clicks.
- ECU Calibration Startup: Reconnect the negative battery terminal using your 10mm wrench. Start the engine, but DO NOT touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. Let the vehicle idle. The 3.7L ECU needs this uninterrupted time to read the new intake air volume and adjust the fuel trims accordingly.
