The Wrench Time: 2011-2019 Jeep Cherokee Grand Cherokee 5.7L Intake

  • Silicone spray or soapy water (for sliding the new IAT grommet)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The biggest headache on the WK2 Hemi platform is the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor. The factory plastic gets incredibly brittle from years of under-hood heat cycles. Do NOT pry it with a screwdriver. Twist it exactly a quarter-turn counter-clockwise and gently wiggle it free. Also, when yanking the stock airbox out, watch out for the lower rubber mounting grommets—they love to pop out and disappear into the engine bay abyss. Keep an eye on them.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part from your 2011-2019 Jeep Cherokee Grand Cherokee 5.7L

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and safely reset the ECU’s long-term fuel trims.
  2. Remove the Engine Cover: Grab the factory 5.7L Hemi engine cover by the front edges and pull straight up to unseat it from the mounting ball studs. Set it aside safely so it doesn’t get scratched.
  3. Unplug the IAT Sensor: Locate the IAT sensor on the factory intake tube. Slide the red locking tab back, press the release clip, and pull the wiring harness off. Use a panel popper to pry the plastic harness retaining clip out of the factory tube so the wire is completely free.
  4. Disconnect the PCV Breather: Pull the crankcase breather hose off the side of the factory airbox. If it feels glued on by heat and oil, carefully walk it off with your panel popper rather than ripping the rubber hose.
  5. Remove the Stock Intake Assembly: Loosen the hose clamp at the throttle body using your 8mm socket. Remove the 8mm bolt securing the front of the airbox to the core support. Firmly grasp the entire airbox assembly and pull straight up to pop it out of the lower fender grommets. Pull the whole unit out of the engine bay.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Jeep Grand Cherokee

  1. Prep the Heat Shield: Assemble the aftermarket heat shield and install the provided rubber edge trim. Drop it into the factory WK2 airbox location and secure it using your 10mm socket, ensuring the lower pegs seat fully into those factory rubber grommets you saved.
  2. Transfer the IAT Sensor: This is the critical step. Extremely carefully twist the factory IAT sensor counter-clockwise out of the OEM tube. Apply a tiny drop of silicone spray to the new rubber grommet on your aftermarket tube, and gently push the sensor in, making sure the thermistor tip is exposed to the airflow.
  3. Mount the Intake Tube: Slide the provided silicone couplers onto the throttle body and the new intake tube. Drop the tube into position and snug down the band clamps with your 8mm socket. Do not overtighten and crush the aftermarket tubing.
  4. Final Connections: Attach the high-flow air filter to the end of the tube inside the heat shield and tighten the clamp with an 8mm socket. Reconnect the PCV breather hose to the new fitting on the tube. Finally, plug the factory wiring harness back into the IAT sensor and push the red locking tab down.
  5. The ECU Relearn Startup: Reconnect the negative battery terminal with your 10mm wrench. Double-check that no tools are left under the hood. Start the engine, but do not touch the gas pedal for 20 seconds. Let it idle on its own so the ECU can map the newly increased airflow without tripping a code.
