Optimize Airflow and Throttle Response for Your 3.7L PowerTech V6
Who It’s For: Designed specifically for 2005-2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2006-2010 Jeep Commander owners running the 3.7L PowerTech V6 engine.
The Problem: The PowerTech V6 is notorious for heat soak and a sluggish mid-range response. The factory air box was engineered primarily for sound suppression, using a restrictive paper filter and accordion-style plastic tubing that creates massive air turbulence and limits the engine’s ability to pull in clean, cool oxygen.
The Solution: We engineered this intake to eliminate the factory bottlenecks of the PowerTech V6, delivering reliable performance through mandrel-bent aluminum piping and a high-flow dry filtration system that increases air velocity directly into the throttle body.
Why This is the Ultimate Upgrade
- Measurable Performance Gains: By optimizing the air-to-fuel ratio via better flow, you can expect an increase of 5 to 10 Horsepower and 6 to 8 lb-ft of Torque, along with improved fuel economy.
- Maintenance-Free Filtration: Features a high-flow micro cotton gauze air filter that is completely washable and reusable. Unlike traditional performance filters, this unit does not require oil, protecting your sensors from fouling.
- Enhanced Intake Note: Replaces the muffled factory sound with a deeper, more aggressive throaty tone under load, letting the V6 breathe like it was meant to from the factory.

Installation & Tools
Installation & Tools
The Wrench Time
- Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
- Difficulty: 3/10 - A straightforward bolt-on for the XK chassis, but requires patience with aged factory plastics and sensor retention.
Tools You Will Need
- 10mm Socket & Ratchet (For the battery terminal and factory airbox bolts)
- 8mm Socket or Nut Driver (For hose clamps)
- Flathead Screwdriver (For gently prying stubborn rubber)
- Plastic Panel Popper (To safely remove the IAT sensor wiring clip)
- Silicone Spray Lubricant (Crucial for seating the sensor into the new tube)
The 3.7L PowerTech engine is notorious for its brittle factory PCV breather hose that runs from the oil filler neck to the intake. Enthusiasts on the XK forums warn that this plastic line snaps with almost zero pressure. Do not bend it. Wiggle it off straight, and if it fights you, hit it with a blast of silicone spray. Additionally, the IAT (Intake Air Temperature) sensor uses a delicate twist-to-lock mechanism in the factory tube. Never yank it straight out, or you’ll be walking to the parts store.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench or socket to prevent check engine lights and reset the ECU fuel trims for your 2006-2010 Jeep Commander 3.7L.
- Unplug the IAT Sensor: Locate the Intake Air Temp sensor on the factory intake tube. Slide the red locking tab back with a flathead screwdriver, press the release, and unplug the harness. Use your panel popper to free the wiring harness anchor from the plastic tube.
- Detach the PCV Breather: Carefully pull the PCV breather hose off the factory airbox. Grip it close to the nipple and twist gently to break the seal before pulling.
- Loosen the Clamps: Grab your 8mm socket and loosen the band clamps securing the factory intake tube to the throttle body and the airbox lid. Wiggle and pull to separate the tube from the throttle body.
- Extract the Factory Box: Remove the 10mm mounting bolts holding the lower airbox assembly to the chassis. Once unbolted, pull straight up firmly to pop the heavy factory box out of its rubber mounting grommets and remove the entire assembly from the engine bay.
Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Jeep Commander (2006-2010) 3.7L V6 Engine
- Transfer the IAT Sensor: Gently rotate the IAT sensor counter-clockwise 90 degrees and pull it out of the factory tube. Spray a tiny amount of silicone lubricant on the sensor O-ring and press it carefully into the grommet on your new aftermarket intake tube.
- Mount the Heat Shield: Drop the new heat shield into the factory location. Press it down into the OEM rubber grommets and secure it using the supplied hardware and your 10mm socket. Make sure the weather stripping is firmly pressed onto the top edge to seal against the hood.
- Install the New Tube & Filter: Slide the silicone coupler onto the throttle body and tighten the inner clamp with your 8mm socket. Insert the new intake tube into the coupler and the new high-flow air filter. Tighten all remaining 8mm clamps until they are snug, but do not overtighten and crush the tube.
- Reconnect the Plumbing: Push the factory PCV breather hose onto the new intake tube’s aluminum nipple. Finally, plug the IAT sensor harness back in and push the red locking tab forward to secure it.
- Start Up & Relearn: Reconnect your negative battery terminal with your 10mm wrench. Start the engine. On the first startup, the vehicle gas pedal should not be touched for 20 seconds until the ECU adjusts to the new airflow volume. Listen for any vacuum leaks near the throttle body coupler.
