Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The biggest headache on the XJ, ZJ, and WJ platforms is the factory CCV (Crankcase Ventilation) plastic tubing. After decades of the legendary 4.0L engine heat soak, these plastic lines are incredibly brittle. When disconnecting the CCV breather from the factory intake tube, do not bend or force it. Wiggle it gently. Additionally, handle the IAT (Intake Air Temperature) sensor with extreme care; twist it slowly to break the seal rather than prying it out, or you’ll be making a run to the parts store.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part from your 1997-2004 Jeep Cherokee Grand Cherokee 4.0L

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and to force the ECU to reset its fuel trims for the new airflow.
  2. Unplug the Sensors and Breathers: Locate the IAT sensor plugged into the side of the factory intake tube. Depress the locking tab and pull the harness connector free. Next, carefully pull the plastic CCV breather line away from the side of the intake tube.
  3. Loosen the Throttle Body Clamp: Grab your 8mm nut driver and loosen the worm-gear clamp securing the factory rubber intake tube to the top of the throttle body.
  4. Unbolt the Factory Airbox: Use your 10mm socket and a small extension to remove the mounting bolts holding the lower airbox housing to the Jeep’s inner fender. Pull any wiring harness clips off the box using a panel popper.
  5. Extract the Assembly: Lift the entire airbox and tube assembly up and out of the engine bay as one piece. If the factory rubber mounting grommets stick to the chassis, pry them out with a flathead screwdriver.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Jeep Cherokee/Grand Cherokee (1997-2004) 4.0L I6 Engine

  1. Assemble and Mount the Heat Shield: Drop the new aftermarket heat shield into the space vacated by the factory airbox. Secure it to the factory mounting points using the supplied hardware and your 10mm socket.
  2. Transfer the IAT Sensor: Carefully twist and pull the factory IAT sensor out of the old intake tube. Coat the rubber grommet on the new intake tube with a quick hit of silicone spray, then gently press the IAT sensor into place until fully seated.
  3. Install the New Intake Tube: Slide the provided silicone coupler over the 4.0L throttle body and secure it loosely with your 8mm nut driver. Insert the new intake tube into the coupler, then guide the opposite end through the heat shield aperture.
  4. Connect the Filter and CCV Breather: Attach the high-flow air filter to the end of the intake tube inside the heat shield and tighten the clamp. Carefully push the factory CCV breather line onto the new intake tube’s vacuum nipple. Reconnect the IAT sensor wiring harness until it clicks.
  5. Final Torque and Startup: Double-check all hose clamps for snugness. Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Start the engine, but do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds so the ECU can properly adjust the idle and recognize the incoming cooler air.
