Cold Air Intake System for Infiniti FX35 / G35 VQ35DE (2003–2006)
This cold air intake system is designed to replace the factory air box on 2003–2006 Infiniti FX35 and G35 models equipped with the VQ35DE V6 engine. The system improves airflow by reducing restriction through the intake path, allowing cooler, denser air to reach the engine. This results in improved throttle response, increased engine output, and a more audible induction sound.
The intake system uses T304 aluminum piping to create a smoother airflow path compared to the factory plastic intake tube. The high-flow air filter provides filtration while maintaining lower restriction than stock. Together, these components allow the engine to breathe more efficiently across the RPM range.
Vehicle Fitment
- 2003–2006 Infiniti FX35 (3.5L V6 VQ35DE)
- 2003–2006 Infiniti G35 Coupe (3.5L V6 VQ35DE)
- 2003–2006 Infiniti G35 Sedan (3.5L V6 VQ35DE)
- Compatible with automatic and manual transmissions
Performance & Design
The system is engineered to improve airflow efficiency, which can result in measurable gains in horsepower and torque when tested under controlled conditions. Performance improvements will vary based on vehicle condition, elevation, ambient temperature, and existing modifications. The intake produces a deeper induction sound due to the removal of the factory resonator and the open-element filter design.
T304 aluminum construction provides corrosion resistance and reduces weight compared to factory components. The mandrel-bent tubing maintains consistent inner diameter throughout the piping to minimize turbulence. Silicone couplers and stainless steel clamps provide secure, vibration-resistant connections.
Features & Components
- T304 aluminum intake piping with mandrel bends
- High-flow washable air filter with reusable design
- Silicone couplers for connection points
- Stainless steel clamps for secure fitment
- Smooth inner diameter tubing for reduced restriction
- Filter can be cleaned and reused approximately every 50,000 miles
What's Included
- T304 aluminum intake pipe
- High-flow washable air filter
- Silicone couplers
- Stainless steel clamps
- Installation hardware
- Installation instructions
Installation
- Direct replacement for factory air box assembly
- Uses factory mounting locations
- No cutting or drilling required
- Installation time approximately 60 minutes
- Basic hand tools required (screwdriver, socket wrench)
Installation Note:
After installation, disconnect the negative battery terminal for 10–15 seconds to allow the engine control unit to reset and adapt to the increased airflow characteristics. This helps optimize engine performance with the new intake system.
Material Specifications
The intake pipe is constructed from T304 aluminum, which provides resistance to heat and corrosion in the engine bay environment. Silicone couplers maintain flexibility across temperature ranges and resist cracking over time. Stainless steel clamps provide consistent clamping force and resist loosening from engine vibration.
The washable air filter uses a dry filtration media that can be cleaned with appropriate filter cleaning products and reused. This eliminates the need for replacement filters during routine maintenance intervals, reducing long-term ownership costs.
This cold air intake system provides improved airflow characteristics for the VQ35DE engine while maintaining reliable filtration and a direct-fit installation. The system integrates with existing engine management systems without requiring additional tuning or modifications.

Installation & Tools
Installation & Tools
The Wrench Time
- Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
- Difficulty: 3/10 - A straightforward driveway bolt-on, but requires a steady hand when dealing with sensitive factory engine management electronics.
Tools You Will Need
- 10mm Socket & Ratchet (For the battery terminal and factory airbox mounting bolt)
- 8mm Nut Driver or Socket (For hose clamps)
- Panel Popper / Trim Tool (For removing the factory air duct retaining clips)
- #2 Phillips or JIS Screwdriver (For the MAF sensor screws)
- Needle Nose Pliers (For the factory PCV breather hose clamp)
The VQ35DE forum community universally agrees that the biggest headache on this install is stripping the factory Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor screws. They are notoriously soft. Ensure your #2 Phillips screwdriver is seated perfectly before applying torque. Even better, use a JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) screwdriver if you have one in your box. Secondly, NEVER touch the exposed wire element inside the MAF sensor; the oils from your skin will contaminate it, causing an erratic idle, a bogging engine, and an instant Check Engine Light.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal on your 2003-2006 Infiniti G35 FX35 3.5L using a 10mm wrench. This prevents check engine lights while the engine sensors are unplugged and resets the ECU learning trims.
- Remove the Front Air Scoop: Use your panel popper to carefully pry up the two plastic pop-clips holding the factory ram-air duct above the front grille. These factory plastics are old and highly brittle, so pry slowly to avoid snapping the heads off. Pull the duct away.
- Unplug the MAF Sensor: Locate the MAF sensor on the factory airbox tube. Depress the locking tab on the harness and slide the plug off. Tuck the wiring safely out of your working path.
- Remove the Accordion Tube: The factory ribbed "G-tube" is restrictive and prone to cracking with age. Use your 8mm nut driver to loosen the hose clamps at the throttle body and the airbox. Use your pliers to pinch and pull back the PCV breather hose clamp, disconnect the hose, and pull the entire tube out of the engine bay.
- Extract the Factory Airbox: Remove the single 10mm mounting bolt securing the lower airbox housing to the driver side inner fender well. Pull the entire airbox assembly straight up to pop it free from the rubber mounting grommets in the chassis.
Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake
- Transfer the MAF Sensor: Delicately unscrew the MAF sensor from the factory housing using your #2 Phillips screwdriver. Pull it straight out without touching the element, and slide it into the new aftermarket intake tube. Secure it with the new provided hardware. Turn the screws until they are just snug—do not over-tighten, or you will strip the threads or crack the new housing.
- Mount the Heat Shield: Drop the new heat shield into the factory airbox location. Secure it using the original 10mm mounting bolt and press the mounting pegs firmly down into the factory chassis rubber grommets.
- Install the Intake Tube and Couplers: Slide the silicone couplers onto the throttle body and the new intake tube. Position the tube so it doesn’t rub against any hard brake lines or the strut tower, then tighten down the clamps firmly using your 8mm nut driver. Push the factory PCV breather hose onto the intake tube nipple and secure it with the factory spring clamp using your pliers.
- Mount the Filter and Reconnect: Attach the high-flow air filter to the end of the intake tube inside the heat shield enclosure and tighten the clamp with your 8mm nut driver. Plug the MAF sensor wiring harness back in until you hear a distinct click. Double-check all couplers to ensure they are fully seated to prevent vacuum leaks.
- Relearn the ECU: Reconnect your negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench. Start the vehicle. On the first startup, the vehicle gas pedal should not be touched for a 20 seconds until the ECU adjusts to the increased airflow parameters. Let it idle to operating temperature and listen for any whistling that would indicate an intake leak.
