Unlock the True Potential of Your Tiburon Beta I: High-Flow Cold Air Intake

Who It’s For: Designed specifically for 1997-2001 Hyundai Tiburon Base/FX owners running the 2.0L Beta I engine, as well as 1996-2000 Hyundai Elantra owners with the 1.8L or 2.0L Beta I engine. If you’re looking to wake up that engine and get a noticeable performance bump without breaking the bank, this is your ticket.

The Problem: From the factory, those early Hyundai Beta I engines were designed with efficiency and quietness in mind, not outright performance. The stock air box and intake tube are often restrictive, prone to heat soak, and utilize a paper filter that becomes a significant bottleneck. This chokes the engine’s ability to breathe freely, particularly when you’re pushing it, leading to sluggish throttle response and untapped power. I’ve seen countless cars like these benefit from letting them inhale properly.

The Solution: We’ve engineered this cold air intake to directly address those factory limitations of the Beta I engine. By replacing the restrictive stock components with a free-flowing, high-efficiency system, you’re not just changing a part; you’re optimizing your engine’s respiration. This means a significant boost in airflow, better engine efficiency, and a truly noticeable improvement in performance and sound that you’ll feel every time you hit the gas.

Why This is the Ultimate Upgrade

  • Real-World Performance Gains: Expect to see a jump of up to 10% in both horsepower and torque. This isn’t just a theoretical number; it translates directly to quicker acceleration, more responsive throttle input, and a more engaging driving experience, whether you’re merging onto the highway or enjoying a backroad.
  • Built for Durability & Longevity: Crafted from premium T304 lightweight aluminum piping, this intake is designed to resist corrosion and dissipate heat more effectively than plastic, ensuring colder, denser air reaches your engine. The washable, reusable filter means you’re not constantly buying replacements, and it’s engineered to go up to 50,000 miles under normal driving conditions between cleanings.
  • Effortless Installation: This isn’t a project that requires a lift and specialized tools. Designed as a direct bolt-on replacement for your factory air box and intake tube, most enthusiasts can complete the install in under 60 minutes with basic hand tools. Plus, it’s engineered not to void your vehicle’s warranty, giving you peace of mind.

Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time

  • Estimated Time: 60-90 Minutes (wrestling the factory resonator out takes extra time)
  • Difficulty: 4/10 - A straightforward bolt-on for the 1997-2001 Hyundai Tiburon 2.0L, but accessing the fender well requires removing plastics.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm and 12mm sockets with a long extension
  • 8mm socket or nut driver (for new hose clamps)
  • Phillips and Flathead screwdrivers
  • Pliers (for factory spring clamps)
  • Panel popper tool (crucial for fender liner clips)
  • Floor jack and jack stands (optional, but highly recommended for wheel clearance)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The RD1 and RD2 chassis Tiburons suffer from a notorious community headache: the massive, baffling factory intake resonator box buried inside the driver’s side fender well. Do not attempt to yank it up through the engine bay. You must peel back the plastic splash guard in the wheel well to access the hidden mounting bolts. Additionally, the Beta 1 engine utilizes an Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor embedded directly in the brittle factory corrugated rubber tube. The plastic tip of this sensor gets extremely fragile after two decades of heat cycling—twist and pull it out with extreme care so you do not snap the probe.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and allow the ECU to reset its fuel trims.
  2. Unplug the IAT Sensor and Breather: Carefully depress the locking tab on the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor harness and unplug it. Next, use your pliers to squeeze the spring clamp on the valve cover breather hose and pull the hose free from the factory intake tube.
  3. Remove the Corrugated Tube: Using a Phillips head screwdriver or a 10mm socket, loosen the hose clamps securing the rubber intake tube to the throttle body and the upper airbox. Wiggle the tube free and set it aside.
  4. Extract the Upper and Lower Airbox: Unclip the metal latches holding the upper airbox and remove it along with the factory paper filter. Next, use your 10mm socket on an extension to remove the three bolts securing the lower airbox tray to the chassis. Lift the tray out of the engine bay.
  5. Defeat the Fender Resonator: Jack up the front driver’s side and secure it on a jack stand (or turn the steering wheel hard to the right). Use your panel popper tool to carefully pry out the plastic retaining clips holding the inner fender splash guard. Pull the liner back to reveal the factory resonator box. Use your 10mm socket and a long extension to remove the hidden mounting bolts, then drop the resonator out from the bottom.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Hyundai Tiburon Base/FX (1997-2001) 2.0L Engine

  1. Prep the Throttle Body: Slide the provided silicone reducer coupler onto the throttle body. Slide two new hose clamps over the coupler, but only tighten the throttle body side using your 8mm socket. Leave the other clamp loose for now.
  2. Transfer the IAT Sensor: Gently extract the factory IAT sensor from the old rubber tube. Lubricate the supplied rubber grommet on the new aluminum intake pipe with a single drop of clean motor oil. Carefully push the IAT sensor into the grommet, ensuring it seats fully without forcing the plastic tip.
  3. Route the New Piping: Feed the lower section of the new cold air intake pipe down through the hole in the chassis where the factory airbox used to sit, guiding it into the open fender well. Insert the top end of the pipe into the silicone coupler at the throttle body.
  4. Mount the Filter and Bracket: From underneath the vehicle (inside the fender well), slide the new high-flow cone filter onto the end of the intake pipe and tighten the clamp firmly with your 8mm socket. Align the welded bracket on the intake pipe with the factory lower airbox mounting point. Secure the bracket using the provided vibration mount and hardware with a 10mm socket.
  5. Final Connections and ECU Reset: Reconnect the valve cover breather hose to the nipple on the new intake pipe. Plug the IAT sensor harness back in. Reinstall your fender liner clips and lower the vehicle. Finally, reconnect the negative battery terminal. Crucial Step: Upon the first startup, do not touch the gas pedal for a full 20 seconds. Allow the 1997-2001 Hyundai Tiburon 2.0L to idle and let the ECU calibrate to the new, unrestricted airflow.
