Wake Up Your 2001-2005 Honda Civic D17 with a True Cold Air Intake Upgrade

Who It’s For: Designed specifically for 7th Gen Honda Civic owners running the D17 series engine equipped with a manual transmission. Whether you’re daily driving an EM2 coupe or an ES1 sedan, this is for the enthusiast looking to improve throttle response and engine acoustics.

The Problem: From the factory, the D17 engine is choked by a restrictive air box and a series of plastic resonators designed more for sound suppression than performance. This setup creates turbulence and pulls in heat-soaked air from the top of the engine bay, which significantly hampers the efficiency of the D17 engine.

The Solution: We engineered this intake system to bypass those factory bottlenecks. By utilizing mandrel-bent aluminum piping and a high-flow micro cotton gauze filter, we provide a direct, cool air path to the throttle body. This lowers intake air temperatures (IATs), allowing for more aggressive timing and better combustion.

Why This is the Ultimate Upgrade

  • Proven Power Gains: Dyno-estimated increases of 5 to 10 horsepower and 6 to 8 lb-ft of torque by optimizing air-to-fuel ratios and volumetric efficiency.
  • Maintenance-Free Filtration: Features a dry-media micro cotton gauze filter that is completely washable and reusable. Unlike traditional performance filters, this requires no oiling, protecting your Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor from contamination.
  • Manual Transmission Optimized: Specifically clearanced for the shift linkages and slave cylinder placement found on manual transmission models, ensuring zero interference during hard shifts.

The Performance Promise

Lived Experience Tip: To get the most out of this install, we highly recommend disconnecting your battery terminal for at least 10 minutes after the installation is complete. This forces the ECU to reset its long-term fuel trims and “learn” the increased air volume immediately, ensuring you feel the performance difference on your very first drive. Buy with confidence. Backed by real automotive experts and fast shipping.

Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time

  • Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
  • Difficulty: 3/10 - Dropping the massive factory resonator out of the fender well is the most tedious part. The rest is basic bolt-on.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm socket and 10mm wrench
  • 8mm socket or Phillips screwdriver
  • Panel popper (clip removal tool)
  • Pliers (for OEM spring clamps)
  • Socket extension (6-inch minimum)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The 7th Gen EM2/ES1 chassis is infamous for its gigantic factory intake resonator hidden behind the front bumper. Don’t try to force it out from the top. Use a panel popper to carefully remove the brittle 20-year-old plastic clips holding the driver’s side wheel well liner. Peel the liner back to expose the hidden resonator bolts. Also, handle the factory IAT (Intake Air Temperature) sensor like glass—do not twist it forcefully out of the factory rubber tube, or you’ll snap the plastic probe right off.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start your 2001-2005 Honda Civic 1.7L installation by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and to reset the ECU.
  2. Unplug the IAT Sensor: Locate the IAT sensor plugged directly into the factory rubber intake hose. Gently press the tab and disconnect the wiring harness. Use pliers to pinch and slide back the spring clamp on the valve cover breather hose, then pull the hose off the intake tube.
  3. Loosen the Clamps: Use an 8mm socket to loosen the hose clamp securing the factory rubber intake tube to the throttle body, and the clamp securing it to the upper airbox. Pull the rubber tube off and set it aside.
  4. Remove the Airbox: Grab your 10mm socket and a 6-inch extension to remove the bolts holding the upper and lower airbox assembly to the engine bay. Lift the airbox out of the vehicle.
  5. Extract the Resonator: Turn the steering wheel all the way to the right. Use your panel popper to remove the plastic retaining clips on the driver’s side splash guard. Pull the liner back to access the massive OEM resonator box hiding inside the bumper. Use your 10mm socket to remove the hidden mounting bolts holding it to the chassis, and pull the entire resonator assembly out through the bottom.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake

  1. Prep the Throttle Body: Slide the provided silicone reducer coupler onto the throttle body of your 2001-2005 Honda Civic 1.7L. Secure the throttle body side using an 8mm socket to tighten the worm gear clamp. Leave the outer clamp loose for now.
  2. Route the Intake Pipe: Carefully feed the new cold air intake pipe down into the fender well hole where the factory resonator used to be. Align the upper portion into the silicone coupler at the throttle body.
  3. Secure the Bracket: Align the welded bracket on the intake pipe with the factory mounting point on the chassis. Install the supplied rubber vibration mount and tighten it down using a 10mm socket. Do not overtighten; the rubber mount needs to flex slightly with engine movement to prevent cracking the aluminum pipe.
  4. Transfer the IAT Sensor: Push the supplied rubber grommet into the pre-drilled hole on the new intake pipe. Very carefully push your factory IAT sensor into the grommet by hand until it seats flush. Reconnect the sensor wiring harness. Attach the new silicone breather hose from the valve cover to the welded nipple on the intake pipe.
  5. Install the Filter and Initialize: From behind the wheel well liner, slide the new high-flow conical filter onto the bottom of the intake pipe. Tighten the filter clamp with your 8mm socket. Reinstall your splash guard clips securely. Finally, reconnect the negative battery terminal with your 10mm wrench. Start the vehicle and do not touch the gas pedal for 20 seconds while the ECU adjusts its long-term fuel trims to account for the new airflow volume.
