Your factory intake was designed for one thing: silence. It chokes the airflow to keep your cabin quiet, effectively putting a muzzle on your V8. It’s time to remove the restriction and let that EcoTec3 engine actually breathe.
Performance Cold Air Intake System for Chevrolet Silverado / GMC Sierra / SUV (K2XX Platform)
If you drive a K2XX platform truck or SUV, you know the 5.3L and 6.2L engines are capable powerplants, but they feel lazy off the line. This is largely due to the OEM intake design. The factory setup is full of accordion-style ribbing, resonators, and sound-canceling baffles that create turbulence and restrict air volume. GM designed it to be quiet, not efficient. By forcing air through that convoluted plastic maze, you lose throttle response and peak output.
This aluminum cold air intake deletes the factory "silencer" and replaces the turbulent stock tube with smooth, mandrel-bent T304 aluminum. Aluminum dissipates heat faster than the thick stock plastic and allows for a higher volume of laminar airflow directly into the throttle body. The result is an engine that reacts immediately when you step on the gas, rather than hesitating while it gasps for air.
Beyond the dyno numbers, this upgrade changes the character of the truck. Under normal cruising, it remains civilized. However, under heavy load, you get that deep, throaty induction growl that a V8 is supposed to have. This system is designed specifically for the MAF sensor scaling of the 2014-2019 trucks, ensuring you get the power bump without throwing a Check Engine Light, provided you follow the battery reset procedure.
Why You Need This Upgrade
- Delete the Restriction: Replaces the baffled factory airbox and ribbed tubing for smooth, direct airflow.
- Dyno-Proven Gains: Engineered to boost horsepower and torque by up to 10% by maximizing air volume.
- Hear the V8: Unlocks a deep, sporty intake sound that is audible under acceleration but quiet at idle.
- Maintenance Free: Features a high-flow, washable filter that lasts the life of the truck (clean every 50k miles).
- T304 Aluminum Construction: Lightweight, corrosion-resistant piping looks better in the engine bay than stock black plastic.
- No Tune Required: Designed to work with the factory ECU mapping.

Installation Notes
Installation is straightforward and uses existing mounting points; no drilling or cutting is required. You will need basic hand tools (screwdrivers, socket set) to remove the factory airbox clamps. Critical Step: You must disconnect the negative battery terminal for at least 15 minutes during installation. This resets the ECU's fuel trim parameters, forcing the computer to "re-learn" the increased airflow volume immediately upon startup. Failing to do this may result in a rough idle until the computer self-adjusts over time.

Installation & Tools
Installation & Tools
The Wrench Time
- Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
- Difficulty: 2/10 - Basic hand tools are all you need, but you must be delicate with the MAF sensor and the notoriously brittle EcoTec3 plastic fittings on this K2XX platform.
Tools You Will Need
- 10mm socket and ratchet (Battery terminal, factory airbox tray bolts)
- 8mm socket or nut driver (Hose clamps)
- T15 Torx driver (MAF sensor screws)
- Panel popper or flathead screwdriver (Wire harness clips)
- Silicone spray lube (For fighting stubborn factory rubber grommets)
The biggest headache on the 2014-2019 GMC Sierra 5.3L 6.2L L83/L86 engines is the factory PCV breather line connected to the intake tube. The heat-cycled plastic gets incredibly brittle. Do NOT pry on it. Push the grey release tab inward, wiggle gently, and pull straight out. Breaking this fitting means dealing with a massive vacuum leak, a rough idle, and a trip to the parts counter. Also, never use a Phillips head on the MAF sensor—it requires a strict T15 Torx, or you will strip the heads instantly.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part from your 2014-2019 GMC Sierra 5.3L 6.2L
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench or socket to prevent check engine lights and allow the ECU to reset.
- Disconnect the MAF Sensor: Locate the Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor on the factory airbox. Slide the red locking tab back, press down on the black release clip, and pull the harness free. Use your panel popper to unclip the wire harness tree from the side of the airbox.
- Release the PCV Breather Line: Locate the hard plastic PCV line on the intake tube resonator. Depress the grey locking tab fully and pull the line straight off the fitting. Tuck it out of the way.
- Loosen the Clamps: Grab your 8mm socket or nut driver and loosen the hose clamps at the throttle body and the airbox housing. Wiggle the factory intake tube free and remove it from the engine bay.
- Yank the Airbox: The factory lower airbox is held in place by friction grommets. Grab the box firmly with both hands and pull straight up. If the K2XX platform grommets are fighting you, shoot a little silicone spray lube down at the base pins to pop them loose.
Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for GMC Sierra (2014-2019) 5.3L/6.2L V8 Engines
- Transfer the MAF Sensor: Using your T15 Torx driver, carefully remove the two screws holding the factory MAF sensor. Pull the sensor out straight. Do not touch the delicate internal wires of the sensor. Insert the MAF sensor into your new aftermarket intake tube, securing it with the provided hardware.
- Mount the New Airbox/Heat Shield: Drop the new heat shield or airbox assembly into the factory mounting tray. Secure it using the provided hardware and your 10mm socket.
- Seat the Couplers and Tube: Slide the provided silicone couplers onto the throttle body and the new airbox flange. Slide the new intake tube into the couplers. Align everything so it sits flush, then snug down all clamps with your 8mm socket. Make them tight, but do not overtighten and crush the tubing.
- Reconnect the Vitals: Push the factory PCV breather line onto the new intake tube fitting until you hear a definitive "click." Plug the MAF sensor harness back in, pressing the red locking tab down to secure it.
- The 20-Second Startup Rule: Reconnect your negative battery terminal with the 10mm wrench. Start the engine, but do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. The EcoTec3 ECU needs this idle time to read the new, higher volume of airflow and adjust the fuel trims without throwing a Lean Code.
