Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
If you frequent the K2XX truck forums, you already know the universally hated flaw on the LV3 Ecotec3 engine: the factory PCV breather tube fitting. The gray plastic release tab on the breather line becomes extremely brittle from engine heat. If you try to blindly pry or yank it off the factory intake tube, it will snap, leaving you with a vacuum leak and a mandatory trip to the parts counter. Take your time, push the fitting inward slightly to relieve tension, fully depress the gray tab, and then slide it off.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and protect sensitive electronics.
  2. Unplug the MAF Sensor: Locate the Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor on the 2014-2018 GMC Sierra 4.3L factory intake tube. Slide back the red locking tab, press down on the black release clip, and gently pull the harness off. Use a panel popper to free the harness wire tie from the airbox and tuck the wire safely out of the way.
  3. Disconnect the PCV Breather Line: Locate the hard plastic PCV line connecting to the intake resonator. Carefully depress the gray locking tab completely before pulling the line off the fitting. Do not force this step.
  4. Loosen the Hose Clamps: Using an 8mm socket or a flathead screwdriver, loosen the worm-gear clamp securing the intake tube to the throttle body, as well as the clamp at the lower airbox housing.
  5. Extract the Factory Intake Assembly: Remove the factory 10mm bolt securing the OEM airbox to the passenger fender tray. Grab the entire airbox and intake tube assembly and pull straight up firmly to pop it out of the bottom rubber mounting grommets.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for GMC Sierra (2014-2018) 4.3L V6 Engine Red

  1. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Using a T15 Torx driver, remove the factory MAF sensor from the OEM tube. DO NOT touch the exposed sensor element wire, as the oils from your skin can destroy it. Transfer the sensor to your new aftermarket intake tube using the supplied hardware. Tighten until snug, being careful not to strip the threads.
  2. Assemble and Mount the Heat Shield: Assemble the new heat shield using a 10mm socket and the provided hardware. Press the supplied rubber weather-stripping firmly around the top edge of the shield. Drop the assembly into the factory lower rubber grommets and secure it to the fender using the original 10mm bolt.
  3. Route the Couplers and Intake Tube: Slide the provided silicone couplers onto the throttle body and the heat shield pass-through. Loosely slide the worm-gear clamps over the couplers. Insert the new red cold air intake tube into position, ensuring it seats properly at both ends.
  4. Lock Down and Reconnect: Align the tube for optimal clearance and tighten all clamps securely with your 8mm socket. Snap the factory PCV breather line onto the new tube’s aluminum fitting until you hear a distinct click. Plug the MAF sensor harness back into the sensor and push the red locking tab down to secure it.
  5. Mount the Red Filter and Initialize the ECU: Slide the new high-flow red cone filter onto the end of the intake tube inside the heat shield and tighten the filter clamp. Reconnect your negative battery terminal. Start the truck, but do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. The ECU needs this uninterrupted idle time to adapt to the massive increase in airflow without throwing a code.
