Performance Cold Air Intake for GMC Sierra 1500 (4.3L V6 EcoTec3)
The factory air box and restrictive paper filter in your 2014-2018 GMC Sierra 1500’s 4.3L V6 engine are designed for quiet efficiency, not peak performance. This OEM setup chokes your engine, limiting crucial airflow and forcing it to work harder to breathe, especially under heavy loads or during rapid acceleration, leading to a “laggy” feeling.
This high-flow cold air intake system completely re-engineers your truck’s induction path, replacing those stock bottlenecks with a streamlined design that draws in a larger volume of cooler, denser air. The result is an immediate boost in throttle response, improved acceleration, and the extra torque your Sierra needs for confident passing and demanding towing situations, all while adding an aggressive sound profile.
Why You Need This Upgrade
- High-Volume Induction: Replaces narrow factory ducting with a high-flow pathway to satisfy your V6 engine’s increased demand for air, optimizing combustion efficiency.
- Instant Throttle Feedback: Eliminates the “laggy” feeling of the stock intake for more immediate power delivery and sharper acceleration, making your truck feel lighter and more responsive.
- Thermal Management: Features a heavy-duty heat shield strategically designed to block ambient engine heat and prevent heat soak, ensuring the incoming air remains dense and oxygen-rich for consistent performance.

Installation & Tools
Installation & Tools
The Wrench Time
- Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
- Difficulty: 2/10 - Basic bolt-on. Patience required for plastic connectors.
Tools You Will Need
- 10mm Socket & Ratchet (Battery and airbox mounting bolts)
- Flathead Screwdriver or 8mm Nut Driver (Hose clamps)
- T15 Torx Bit (CRITICAL: For the MAF sensor screws)
- Panel Popper / Trim Tool (To unclip wiring harness ties without cutting them)
- 3mm or 4mm Allen Key (Often needed for aftermarket hardware, check your specific kit)
On this GM K2XX platform, the Crankcase Vent (CCV) lines connecting to the intake tube utilize fragile plastic quick-connect fittings with grey locking tabs. DO NOT PRY THEM. You must squeeze the grey tab to release. If you muscle it, the plastic will snap, and you will be making an emergency trip to the dealer for new breather lines.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Intake
- Disconnect the Battery: Before touching any sensors on your 2014-2018 GMC Sierra 4.3L, use a 10mm wrench/socket to disconnect the negative battery terminal. This resets the fuel trim strategy and prevents shorting the sensitive MAF sensor.
- Disconnect the CCV Lines: Locate the two plastic breather hoses attached to the stock intake resonator box. Squeeze the grey locking tabs and gently pull them free.
- Remove the MAF Sensor: Unplug the wiring harness from the Mass Air Flow sensor. Use a T15 Torx bit to remove the two screws holding the sensor into the factory tube. Pull the sensor straight out—do not twist or drop it. Set it aside in a clean, safe place immediately.
- Loosen the Clamps: Use a Flathead screwdriver or 8mm nut driver to loosen the hose clamp at the throttle body and the clamp at the airbox lid.
- Remove the Factory Airbox: The bottom half of the airbox is held in by rubber grommets. Firmly grasp the box and rock it upward to pop it out of the mounting tray.
Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for GMC Sierra (2014-2018) 4.3L V6 Engine Blue
- Assemble the Heat Shield: Install the provided weather stripping along the top edge of the new heat shield. This seals against the hood to block engine bay heat. Secure the shield to the factory mounting points using the provided hardware and a 10mm socket.
- Transfer the MAF Sensor: Insert your factory MAF sensor into the adapter on the new Blue Intake Tube. PAY ATTENTION TO FLOW DIRECTION: The sensor bulb should face the incoming air (filter side). Secure it using the provided hardware (usually small hex bolts requiring an Allen key) or the original T15 screws depending on the kit. Do not over-tighten; the plastic flange can crack.
- Install Couplers and Tube: Slide the silicone coupler onto the throttle body and secure gently with a hose clamp. Insert the intake tube into the heat shield side first, then into the throttle body coupler. Align the tube so it does not rub against the alternator or coolant lines.
- Reconnect CCV Lines: Connect the factory crankcase breather hoses to the nipples on the new intake tube. They should click audibly when seated. secure with the provided hose clamps if your kit uses rubber hoses instead of the factory quick-connects.
- Final Check & Start-Up: Install the high-flow air filter onto the tube inside the heat shield and tighten the 8mm hose clamp. Reconnect the MAF harness and the negative battery terminal. CRITICAL STEP: Start the engine and let it idle for 5-10 minutes without touching the gas pedal. This allows the ECU to relearn the new airflow parameters for the 4.3L EcoTec3 engine.
Disclaimer: This is a general guide provided for the 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018 GMC Sierra 4.3L. Always refer to your factory service manual for exact torque specifications and safety procedures.
