Cold Air Intake System with Heat Shield - Chevy Blazer/S10 & GMC Jimmy/Sonoma (1996-2004) 4.3L V6
Wake Up Your Vortec: The Breath of Fresh Air Your Truck Deserves.
The 4.3L V6 powering your Chevy S-10, Blazer, GMC Sonoma, or Jimmy is legendary for its reliability and low-end torque. It’s a true workhorse. However, from the factory, your engine is forced to breathe through a restrictive, baffled air box designed for silence rather than performance. This chokes your throttle response and limits what your truck can truly do.
This Performance Cold Air Intake System is the key to unlocking the hidden potential of your daily driver or work truck. By replacing the restrictive stock intake tube with high-flow piping and a custom steel heat shield, you deliver a massive volume of cool, dense oxygen directly to the engine. The result? A truck that feels lighter on its feet, pulls harder on the highway, and sounds like a beast.
Why Your GM V6 Needs This Upgrade
Heat is the enemy of horsepower. Standard intakes often suck in hot stagnant air from the engine bay. This system features a rugged steel heat shield that isolates the filter from engine heat, ensuring your engine gulps down colder, oxygen-rich air. Whether you are towing a trailer, merging onto the freeway, or just commuting, you will feel the difference the moment you step on the gas.
Key Performance Benefits
- Increased Horsepower & Torque: Optimizes the air-fuel mixture to deliver a noticeable boost in output. Feel the extra pull when hauling or passing.
- Sharper Throttle Response: Eliminates the "laggy" feeling of the stock intake. Your truck will react instantly to your foot.
- Efficient Heat Management: The included powder-coated steel heat shield blocks hot engine air, keeping intake temperatures low for maximum efficiency.
- Improved Fuel Economy: By allowing the engine to breathe easier, combustion becomes more efficient, potentially improving your MPG during normal driving conditions.
- Aggressive Engine Growl: Replace the factory silence with a deep, throaty induction roar under acceleration that lets people know this isn't a stock V6.
Vehicle Fitment
This system is precision-engineered for a direct bolt-on fit for the following vehicles equipped with the 4.3L V6 Engine:
- Chevrolet: Blazer (1996–2004), S-10 Pickup (1996–2004)
- GMC: Jimmy (1996–2004), Sonoma Pickup (1996–2004)
What's in the Box?
- High-velocity induction pipe
- High-flow, reusable performance air filter (Washable)
- Powder-coated steel heat shield
- All necessary couplers, clamps, and hardware
Installation: Simple & Effective
You don't need to be a mechanic to install this upgrade. The system uses factory mounting points for a hassle-free installation. Most enthusiasts can swap out the old box and bolt this system on in under an hour using basic hand tools.
Pro Tip: For the best results, disconnect your battery's negative terminal before installation and leave it off for at least 15 minutes. This clears the ECU's memory, forcing the computer to immediately learn the new airflow parameters for optimized performance.
Ready to Transform Your Drive?
Your truck has been reliable for years—now make it exciting. Stop letting a restrictive air box hold you back.

Installation & Tools
Installation & Tools
The Wrench Time
- Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
- Difficulty: 3/10 - Straightforward bolt-on, but requires patience with 20-year-old brittle plastics and crusty rubber.
Tools You Will Need
- 10mm wrench (for battery terminals)
- 10mm socket & ratchet (for factory airbox bolts and the throttle body stud)
- 8mm socket or 5/16-inch nut driver (for worm gear clamps)
- Flathead screwdriver (for prying stubborn clips)
- Pliers (for the PCV breather hose clamp)
- Silicone spray lubricant (crucial for sensor removal)
On the L35 Vortec 4300, the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor is shoved into a rubber grommet that turns to concrete after two decades of under-hood heat. If you try to pry it out of the factory tube with a screwdriver, you WILL snap the fragile plastic thermistor tip. Blast the base of the sensor with silicone spray lubricant, let it soak for a minute, then gently twist and pull straight out by hand. The same rule applies to the brittle factory PCV breather hose—treat it like glass.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and protect the ECU on your 1996-2004 Chevrolet GMC Blazer Jimmy Sonoma 4.3L.
- Unplug the Sensors: Carefully depress the locking tabs and disconnect the wiring harnesses for the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor (if equipped on your specific year) and the IAT sensor. Tuck the wiring aside.
- Remove the "Vortec Hat": Grab your 10mm socket (or unthread the wingnut, depending on your year) and remove the fastener securing the massive, restrictive plastic resonator box sitting directly on top of the throttle body. Use pliers to squeeze and slide back the clamp on the PCV breather hose, then pull the hose off the resonator.
- Loosen the Clamps: Take your 8mm socket or a flathead screwdriver and loosen all the factory worm clamps connecting the corrugated tubing to the airbox and the throttle body.
- Pull the OEM Airbox: Use your 10mm socket to remove the retaining bolts holding the factory airbox to the passenger side inner fender. Grab the entire S-series factory intake assembly and lift it completely out of the engine bay.
Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for GMC Jimmy Sonoma | Chevy S10 Blazer (1996-2004) 4.3L Engine Red
- Mount the Heat Shield: Drop the aftermarket heat shield into the factory passenger fender location. Align it with the OEM mounting points and bolt it down securely using your 10mm socket and the supplied hardware.
- Install the Silicone Couplers: Slip the supplied silicone coupler onto the throttle body. Slide your hose clamps over the coupler and snug them down just enough so they don’t fall off, using your 8mm socket. Leave them loose enough for adjustment.
- Transfer the Sensors (CRITICAL STEP): Take the factory MAF and IAT sensors you removed earlier and carefully push them into the new pre-drilled holes and supplied rubber grommets on the intake pipe. Do not use tools to force them. Reconnect the PCV breather line to the provided port on the pipe.
- Seat the Intake Tube & Filter: Slide the Red Cold Air Intake pipe into the throttle body coupler. Secure the high-flow cone filter onto the end of the pipe inside the heat shield. Once everything is aligned without rubbing against the A/C lines or alternator, lock down all T-bolt or worm clamps tightly with your 8mm socket.
- The ECU Relearn Protocol: Reconnect the negative battery terminal with your 10mm wrench and plug your sensor harnesses back in. Start the vehicle. DO NOT touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. The ECU needs this undisturbed idle time to adjust its fuel trims to the massive increase in airflow volume.
