Performance Cold Air Intake for GMC Jimmy Sonoma / Chevy S10 Blazer (4.3L V6 Vortec)

The factory intake system on your 1996-2004 GMC Jimmy, Sonoma, Chevrolet S10, or Blazer’s 4.3L V6 engine is designed for noise reduction and cost-effectiveness, not optimal performance. This restrictive design often chokes your engine, limiting the amount of cool, dense air it can ingest, which directly translates to reduced horsepower, torque, and sluggish throttle response, especially during acceleration or when towing.

This high-flow Cold Air Intake system completely replaces the OEM air box and restrictive intake tube, providing a smooth, unimpeded pathway for air to reach your engine. Featuring a specialized steel heat shield and high-flow piping, it isolates the performance air filter from engine bay heat, ensuring your V6 pulls in cooler, denser air for a more efficient and powerful combustion cycle. Experience a significant boost in usable power, improved fuel economy, and a far more engaging driving experience.

Why You Need This Upgrade

  • Increased Output: Unlock additional horsepower and torque, providing a noticeable boost for daily driving, towing, and spirited acceleration.
  • Superior Heat Protection: The included steel heat shield effectively isolates the air filter from hot engine bay temperatures, ensuring a consistent supply of cool, dense air for peak performance.
  • Enhanced Throttle Response: Eliminate the sluggishness of the factory intake, giving you faster and more immediate acceleration when you press the pedal.
  • Improved Fuel Efficiency: Optimize airflow for a more complete fuel burn, which can lead to better gas mileage under various driving conditions.
  • Aggressive Engine Sound: Enjoy a deeper, more pronounced growl from your 4.3L V6, enhancing the driving experience without excessive cabin noise.
  • Durable Construction: Built with high-quality materials, this cold air intake is designed to withstand harsh engine bay conditions and resist corrosion for long-lasting performance.

Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time

  • Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
  • Difficulty: 3/10 - Basic bolt-on, but requires delicate handling of the MAF sensor and brittle factory plastics.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm socket and 13mm socket with ratchet (for battery and factory airbox bolts)
  • 8mm socket or Flathead screwdriver (for hose clamps)
  • Trim panel popper (for wiring harness clips)
  • Silicone spray lubricant (for seating the IAT sensor)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The 4.3L Vortec engine in these S-Series trucks uses a bulky plastic air "hat" (resonator) directly over the throttle body. The rubber sealing ring underneath is notoriously brittle and will likely crumble when you pull it off. Make sure no rubber debris falls directly down into the intake manifold! Also, when transferring your Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor, DO NOT touch the delicate honeycomb mesh inside. S10 forum members constantly hunt down idle surges caused by accidentally poking this screen.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part from your 1996-2004 Chevrolet GMC Blazer Jimmy Sonoma 4.3L

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and clear the ECU memory.
  2. Unplug the Sensors: Locate the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor on the factory air tube and the MAF sensor near the airbox. Gently press the release tabs and unplug the wiring harnesses. Use a trim panel popper to free any wires anchored to the factory intake tube.
  3. Remove the Throttle Body Hat: Loosen the wing nut or the main clamp securing the factory air resonator (the "hat") to the throttle body. Lift the assembly straight up. Check the throttle body blade immediately for any crumbled rubber gasket material.
  4. Remove the PCV Breather: Unhook the PCV breather hose running from the intake tube to the valve cover. The factory plastic connector gets extremely brittle from years of heat cycles—pull it gently so it doesn’t snap off inside the valve cover.
  5. Extract the Airbox: Loosen the hose clamps securing the intake tube using an 8mm socket. Remove the factory airbox by taking out the mounting tray bolts with a 13mm socket and pulling the box straight up off its rubber mounting grommets.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake - Black

  1. Mount the Heat Shield: Assemble the new aftermarket heat shield and lower it into the factory airbox location. Secure the shield using the provided hardware and a 10mm socket.
  2. Install the Throttle Body Coupler: Slide the new silicone coupler over the throttle body. Tighten the lower hose clamp using an 8mm socket, but leave the upper clamp loose for now to allow for adjustments.
  3. Transfer the Sensors (CRITICAL): Remove the MAF sensor from the factory housing. Note the directional arrow on the MAF—it must point toward the engine! Clamp the MAF sensor into the new intake tube. Next, apply a tiny drop of silicone spray lubricant to the new IAT rubber grommet and carefully twist the factory IAT sensor into place. Do not force it.
  4. Position the Intake Tube: Slide the new black cold air intake tube into the throttle body coupler and connect the other end to the MAF sensor and cone filter. Connect the provided PCV breather hose from the new tube to your valve cover. Tighten all remaining hose clamps snugly with your 8mm socket.
  5. Reconnect and Learn: Plug in the MAF and IAT wiring harnesses. Reconnect your negative battery terminal. On the first startup, do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds; let the engine idle so the ECU can calibrate to the new airflow volume without throwing a check engine code.
