The Wrench Time

Tools You Will Need
- 10mm socket, extension, and ratchet
- 10mm wrench
- 8mm nut driver (or flathead screwdriver)
- Panel popper tool (or needle-nose pliers)
- Silicone spray or soapy water
- Dedicated MAF Cleaner
For the GMT400 OBS guys: the factory Vortec air hat and plastic tubing are notoriously brittle after two decades of heat cycling. When removing the factory tubing, be extremely gentle with the inline Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor and the push-in Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor. Don’t pry on the MAF housing—it will crack. If the old rubber grommet for the IAT sensor is hard as a rock, hit it with a little silicone spray before pulling. Unmetered air leaks from cracked plastics are the number one cause of rough idles on these L31/L30 engines!
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and clear the ECU memory.
- Unplug the Sensors: Carefully depress the locking tabs and unplug the wiring harnesses from the MAF sensor and the IAT sensor. Use a panel popper tool to gently free any plastic wire harness clips secured to the factory intake tube or airbox.
- Remove the Factory Vortec Hat: Loosen the wing nut or the top mounting bolt holding the bulky plastic resonator hat to the top of the throttle body. Disconnect the crankcase breather hose from the side of the hat.
- Loosen the Clamps & Pull the Tube: Use your 8mm nut driver to loosen the hose clamps securing the intake tube to the MAF sensor housing. Gently twist the tubing to break the seal and remove it from the engine bay.
- Extract the Airbox: Unbolt the factory airbox from the passenger side fender using a 10mm socket and remove the assembly entirely. Keep the factory hardware; you will need it to mount the new aftermarket heat shield.
Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for 1996-1999 Chevrolet GMC C/K Trucks 5.0L 5.7L
- Assemble the Heat Shield: Bolt the new aftermarket heat shield into the factory airbox location on the fender using the factory bolts and your 10mm socket. Install the provided rubber edge trim around the shield to prevent chafing on the new tubing.
- Transfer the Sensors (CRITICAL): Gently remove the IAT sensor from the factory tube. Spray a tiny bit of soapy water or silicone spray on the new intake tube’s rubber grommet and carefully press the IAT sensor into place. Transfer the MAF sensor into the new silicone couplers. Do not touch the delicate hot wires inside the MAF! If it’s dirty, clean it now using only Dedicated MAF Cleaner.
- Route the New Intake Tube: Slide the new aluminum or poly intake tube into the silicone couplers at the throttle body and the MAF sensor. Attach the new provided crankcase breather hose to the factory valve cover port and the fitting on the new intake tube.
- Tighten All Hardware: Go over all your worm-gear clamps with an 8mm nut driver. Snug them down firmly, but do not overtighten and crush the plastic MAF sensor housing. Reconnect the MAF and IAT wiring harnesses until you feel them "click".
- ECU Relearn & First Startup: Reconnect the negative battery terminal with your 10mm wrench. Start the truck, but do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. Allow the ECU to read the new airflow volume and adjust the idle parameters automatically.
