Boost Power & Sound: High-Flow Cold Air Intake for GMC Canyon Atlas L5 (3.7L 5-Cylinder)

Who It’s For: Designed specifically for 2007-2012 GMC Canyon owners running the venerable Atlas L5 (3.7L 5-cylinder) engine, whether you’re pushing it on the job site, cruising the highway, or just want that responsive feel back.

The Problem: From the factory, your GMC Canyon’s Atlas L5 engine is a workhorse, but its intake system is often its Achilles’ heel when it comes to performance. The stock air box and convoluted tubing are designed more for silence and cost-efficiency than maximum airflow. This restrictive design creates a significant bottleneck, choking your 3.7L L5 and robbing it of potential horsepower and torque, leading to sluggish throttle response and a less engaging driving experience.

The Solution: We engineered this cold air intake system to correct the factory’s design flaws, delivering reliable, optimized performance for your Atlas L5. By replacing the restrictive OEM components with a streamlined, high-flow pathway directly to your throttle body, this kit ensures a denser, cooler charge of air reaches your engine. The result? Sharper throttle response, measurable gains in horsepower and torque, and a far more aggressive, satisfying engine note that truly reflects your truck’s capabilities.

Why This is the Ultimate Upgrade

  • Performance Gains: Experience immediate improvements in throttle response and feel the extra pull. This system is designed to provide measurable increases in horsepower and torque by allowing your Atlas L5 to breathe freely, especially under load.
  • Premium Durability: Constructed with three robust 3" 6061-T6 lightweight aluminum pipes, this intake isn’t just about performance – it’s built to last. The durable anodized finish protects against corrosion and gives a clean, factory-plus look under the hood.
  • Direct Response: Our design mounts directly to the throttle body, minimizing air turbulence and eliminating lag commonly associated with restrictive factory setups. This means a more immediate and satisfying reaction every time you hit the pedal.
  • Enhanced Engine Tone: Love the sound of your engine working? This intake amplifies the natural induction roar of the 3.7L Atlas L5, giving it a deeper, more authoritative growl that’s truly noticeable when you accelerate.
  • Optimized Filtration: Comes complete with a high-flow, washable performance air filter. Not only does it allow for superior airflow, but it also provides excellent filtration against debris, protecting your engine while being easy to clean and reuse.

Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time

  • Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
  • Difficulty: 2/10 - Straightforward bolt-on for the GMT355 platform, but requires a gentle hand with sensitive electronics and brittle factory plastics.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm wrench and 10mm socket with extension
  • 8mm nut driver or socket
  • T20 Torx driver
  • Flathead screwdriver or panel popper
  • Hex key set (typically 3mm or 4mm for aftermarket hardware)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
On the 3.7L Inline-5 engine, there is a hidden PCV breather hose connected underneath the massive factory resonator box sitting directly on top of the valve cover. Do not just yank the box upward! Reach underneath and unclip this brittle plastic tube first, or you will snap the fitting off the valve cover. Additionally, while the intake is off, take a look at your throttle body—they get notoriously dirty on these I5 engines and a quick clean now will save you a rough idle later.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part from your 2007-2012 GMC Canyon 3.7L

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and protect the ECU.
  2. Unplug the MAF Sensor: Locate the Mass Airflow Sensor on the factory intake tube. Slide the gray locking tab back, push down on the release, and pull the plug free. Use a panel popper to carefully detach the wiring harness clip from the intake tube.
  3. Loosen the Clamps: Grab an 8mm nut driver and loosen the primary hose clamps at the throttle body and the factory airbox.
  4. Disconnect the PCV Hose & Resonator: Lift the front of the factory inline-5 resonator box slightly. Reach underneath and carefully pop the PCV breather hose off the fitting. Once detached, lift and remove the entire resonator assembly from the engine bay.
  5. Remove the Airbox: Use a 10mm socket and an extension to remove the factory bolts holding the lower airbox housing in place. Lift the box out of the chassis.
  6. Extract the MAF Sensor: Carefully remove the factory MAF sensor from the OEM housing using a T20 Torx driver. Set it aside in a clean location where it will not get dropped or contaminated with shop dust.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake

  1. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Carefully insert the factory MAF sensor into your new aftermarket intake tube. Secure it using the supplied Allen-head bolts and a hex key. Ensure the factory O-ring seats properly to prevent vacuum leaks. Do not overtighten and crack the sensor housing.
  2. Mount the Heat Shield: Assemble the new heat shield and edge trim. Bolt it into the factory airbox mounting locations using your 10mm socket.
  3. Install the Couplers: Slide the provided silicone couplers onto the throttle body and the heat shield opening. Slide the new hose clamps on, but leave them loose using your 8mm nut driver to allow for proper rotation and adjustment.
  4. Route the New Intake Tube: Slide the aftermarket tube into the silicone couplers. Connect the newly provided PCV breather hose from the engine valve cover directly to the welded fitting on the intake tube. Tighten all clamps firmly with your 8mm nut driver once positioned properly.
  5. Install the Filter and Reconnect: Slide the new conical air filter onto the end of the intake tube and crank down the primary clamp. Plug the factory MAF wiring harness back in and engage the gray locking clip.
  6. ECU Relearn Protocol: Reconnect the negative battery terminal using your 10mm wrench. Start the truck, but do not touch the gas pedal for 20 seconds. The GMT355 ECU requires this unbothered idle time to adjust its fuel trims to the newly increased airflow.
