DIY Guide: Cold Air Intake for Ford Ranger B4000 (2004-2011) 4.0L Engine for 2004-2011 Ford Ranger 4.0L
Required Tools
- 8mm and 10mm sockets with ratchet
- T20 Torx security bit (for MAF sensor screws)
- Flathead screwdriver or 5/16-inch nut driver
- Needle-nose pliers
Leave the lower factory plastic airbox tray bolted into the fender well. The new open-element cone filter rests directly inside this lower tray to catch cool outside air while shielding it from radiator fan wash.
Phase 1: Factory Component Removal
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal using an 8mm or 10mm wrench to allow the ECU fuel trims to reset.
- Unclip the electrical connector on the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor, and carefully pull the PCV breather hose off the factory plastic intake tube.
- Loosen the hose clamp at the throttle body (under the 4.0L SOHC engine cover), unclip the upper airbox lid, and lift the factory intake tube and upper lid assembly out of the truck, leaving the lower airbox tray in place.
- Use a T20 Torx bit to remove the two screws securing the factory MAF sensor to the stock housing, and gently extract the sensor.
Phase 2: Aftermarket Installation
- Join the main curved polished aluminum intake pipe to the shorter straight MAF adapter section using the supplied black silicone coupler and two stainless worm-gear clamps.
- Insert the factory MAF sensor into the machined aluminum boss on the intake tube and secure it using the provided screws.
- Slide the throttle body silicone coupler onto the throttle body inlet, fit the polished intake assembly into place, and clamp the red high-flow cone filter onto the end of the tube so it rests inside the factory lower airbox tray.
- Attach the factory breather hose to the port on the aluminum pipe, reconnect the MAF wiring harness, tighten all hose clamps with a 5/16-inch nut driver, and reconnect the negative battery terminal.
