Driving your EcoBoost Mustang should feel like unbridled power, not like it’s holding its breath. Unlock the true potential of your 2.3L engine and experience an immediate, exhilarating improvement in throttle response and acceleration.

Performance Cold Air Intake for Ford Mustang (2015-2018) 2.3L EcoBoost

The factory intake system on your 2015-2018 Ford Mustang 2.3L EcoBoost is designed with compromises, prioritizing noise reduction and cost efficiency over raw performance. This often results in a restrictive air path and a bottleneck for the turbocharged engine, especially during aggressive driving or when demanding peak power. The stock air box and convoluted tubing simply can’t deliver the volume of cool, oxygen-rich air your turbo needs to operate at its maximum efficiency.

This precision-engineered cold air intake system directly addresses these limitations, providing your EcoBoost engine with a direct, high-flow pathway for superior air induction. By replacing the entire restrictive factory setup with a high-grade T304 aluminum induction pipe and an advanced conical air filter, it significantly increases the volume and velocity of cooler air entering the turbo. This upgrade ensures sharper throttle response, reduced turbo lag, and a noticeable boost in both horsepower and torque across the RPM range, transforming your driving experience.

Why You Need This Upgrade

  • Boosted Power & Torque: Experience significant increases in horsepower and torque, translating to more immediate acceleration and better pulling power.
  • Enhanced Turbo Response: Eliminate intake restrictions to reduce turbo lag, providing crisper, more linear power delivery.
  • Improved Fuel Efficiency: Optimize air-to-fuel ratios for a more complete combustion, potentially leading to better mileage under normal driving conditions.
  • Aggressive Engine Note: Unleash a deeper, more aggressive induction sound that truly reflects the performance capabilities of your EcoBoost Mustang.
  • Superior Air Filtration: Protect your engine with a high-flow performance air filter designed to block harmful contaminants while maximizing airflow.

Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time

  • Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
  • Difficulty: 3/10 - A straightforward bolt-on, but requires strict patience with Ford’s fragile S550 plastic hose clips.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm socket and ratchet
  • 10mm wrench
  • 8mm socket or nut driver
  • 7mm socket
  • Panel popper tool (or flathead screwdriver)
  • Needle-nose pliers
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The S550 EcoBoost community universally hates the factory PCV and EVAP breather clips. They are notoriously brittle due to engine bay heat cycles. Do not pry them. Push the fitting IN toward the tube first to relieve tension, slide the gray retaining lock over, and then pull off. Breaking these means buying a complete, expensive replacement harness from Ford. Furthermore, handle the factory IAT (Intake Air Temperature) sensor like glass—the twist-lock tab snaps easily if forced.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part from your 2015-2018 Ford Mustang 2.3L

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and safely power down the sensors.
  2. Unplug the IAT Sensor: Locate the Intake Air Temperature sensor on the factory tube. Gently slide the red locking tab back, press the release clip, and disconnect the wiring harness. Carefully twist the sensor counter-clockwise and pull it straight out. Set it somewhere extremely safe where it won’t get dropped.
  3. Disconnect the Breather Lines: Using your bare hands, carefully release the gray locking clips on the PCV and EVAP lines connected to the intake tube. Squeeze the factory clamp on the Bypass Valve (BPV) hose using needle-nose pliers and slide it back, then pull the rubber hose off the fitting.
  4. Loosen the Clamps: Grab your 7mm socket and loosen the hose clamp securing the factory intake tube to the turbo inlet. Then, use an 8mm socket to loosen the clamp at the airbox.
  5. Remove the Factory Airbox: Remove the single factory retaining bolt holding the airbox to the fender using a 10mm socket. Use a panel popper tool to detach the wiring harness clip anchored to the side of the box. Grab the entire airbox assembly and pull firmly upward to pop it out of the lower rubber mounting grommets.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Ford Mustang (2015-2018) 2.3L EcoBoost Engine - Blue

  1. Transfer the IAT Sensor: Take the factory IAT sensor and gently push it into the supplied rubber grommet on your new blue aftermarket intake tube. Ensure it sits flush and secure. Do not use tools to force it or you will crack the sensor housing.
  2. Install the New Airbox / Heat Shield: Drop the new heat shield into the factory location, aligning the bottom posts with the OEM rubber grommets. Secure it to the fender using the factory bolt and your 10mm socket.
  3. Mount the Blue Silicone Couplers: Slide the provided blue silicone step-down coupler onto the turbo inlet. Secure it loosely using the supplied clamps and an 8mm socket. Slide your new high-flow air filter into the heat shield assembly.
  4. Route the Tube and Reconnect Lines: Maneuver the new intake tube into the turbo coupler and the air filter flange. Tighten all clamps down snugly with your 8mm socket. Reconnect the BPV hose using needle-nose pliers for the clamp, and push the factory PCV/EVAP fittings onto the new machined ports until you hear a positive click. Plug the IAT wiring harness back in and lock the red tab.
  5. The First Startup Protocol: Reconnect your negative battery terminal with your 10mm wrench. Start the engine, but do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. The 2015-2018 Ford Mustang 2.3L ECU needs this idle time to read the new airflow dynamics from the relocated IAT sensor and properly adjust the air/fuel trims without throwing a lean code.
