Tools You Will Need
- 10mm and 8mm deep sockets with a 1/4-inch ratchet
- 7mm socket or a flathead screwdriver (for hose clamps)
- T20 Torx bit (for the factory MAF sensor screws)
- 3mm or 4mm Allen wrench (for aftermarket MAF hardware)
- Panel popper tool (for any radiator shroud push-pins)
The Cyclone V6 S550 chassis has two notorious headaches when swapping intakes. First, the factory PCV breather hose connects to the intake tube with a brittle grey/green locking clip. Do not force it. Push the connector inward towards the tube first, depress the lock, then slide it off gently to avoid snapping it. Second, the MAF sensor element is hyper-sensitive. Never touch the exposed wire with your bare hands. The oils from your skin will bake onto the sensor and immediately throw a Check Engine Light on your dash.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal of your 2015-2017 Ford Mustang 3.7L using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and electrical shorts.
- Unplug the MAF Sensor: Locate the Mass Air Flow sensor on the factory intake tube. Slide the red locking tab back, depress the clip, and safely pull the wiring harness off. Tuck it out of the way.
- Release the PCV Breather: Carefully depress the locking tab on the PCV line and pull the hose away from the main intake tube.
- Loosen the Clamps: Use your 7mm socket to loosen the hose clamp securing the factory rubber tube to the throttle body.
- Remove the Factory Airbox: Grab your 10mm socket and remove the single retention bolt holding the factory airbox to the driver-side inner fender. Once removed, lift the entire factory intake assembly firmly upward to pop it out of the lower rubber mounting grommets and completely remove it from the engine bay.
- Extract the MAF Sensor: Place the factory box on a clean workbench. Use a T20 Torx bit to remove the two screws holding the MAF sensor in place. Pull the sensor straight out and set it aside safely on a clean microfiber towel.
Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Ford Mustang (2015-2017) 3.7L V6 Engine Blue
- Transfer the MAF Sensor: Carefully insert the factory MAF sensor into the new blue aluminum intake tube. Ensure the sensor is facing the correct direction for airflow. Secure it using the provided Allen bolts and an Allen wrench. Tighten until just snug—do not over-torque and strip the aluminum threads.
- Mount the Heat Shield: Drop the new aftermarket heat shield into the factory lower rubber grommets. Secure it to the fender using the original 10mm bolt and your 10mm socket.
- Install the Throttle Body Coupler: Slide the supplied silicone coupler onto the throttle body. Slip two hose clamps over the coupler and loosely tighten the throttle body side with an 8mm socket.
- Seat the Blue Intake Tube: Guide the new blue intake tube through the heat shield and slide the opposite end into the throttle body coupler. Attach the high-flow air filter to the end of the tube inside the heat shield. Tighten all remaining hose clamps firmly with your 8mm socket.
- Reconnect Lines and Power: Snap the factory PCV breather line onto the new tube’s machined aluminum fitting until you hear a solid click. Plug the MAF harness back in and push the red tab down to lock it. Finally, reconnect your negative battery terminal with your 10mm wrench.
- Perform the Idle Relearn: Start the engine. On the first startup of your 2015-2017 Ford Mustang 3.7L, the vehicle gas pedal should not be touched for a 20 seconds. Let the engine idle completely hands-free until the ECU correctly adjusts to the new high-flow air parameters.
