Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm Deep Socket & Ratchet (For the battery terminal and factory airbox mounting bolt)
  • 8mm Socket or 5/16" Nut Driver (For factory and aftermarket hose clamps)
  • T20 Torx Driver (Critical for removing the factory MAF sensor)
  • Needle-Nose Pliers (For the S550 factory sound tube clamp)
  • Flathead Screwdriver (For popping any plastic harness retaining clips)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The 2015-2016 Ford Mustang 5.0L features a maze of rigid plastic PCV and EVAP lines connecting to the factory intake. The retaining clips on these lines are incredibly brittle after years of heat cycling. Do not pry them with a screwdriver! Push the fitting IN toward the tube first, slide the locking tab over, and then pull straight off. Additionally, this is the perfect time to unbolt and cap off that useless factory sound tube (sound symposer) that clutters your S550 engine bay.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket to prevent check engine lights and allow the ECU to reset.
  2. Unplug the MAF Sensor: Locate the Mass Air Flow sensor on the factory airbox tube. Slide the red locking tab back, press down firmly on the clip, and carefully disconnect the wiring harness. Tuck it safely out of the way.
  3. Disconnect PCV, EVAP, and Sound Tube: Disengage the plastic breather lines from the factory intake tube (remember the push-in trick from the Pro Tip). Use your pliers to squeeze the spring clamp holding the factory sound tube to the intake, and wiggle it free.
  4. Loosen Hose Clamps: Use your 8mm socket to loosen the primary hose clamp securing the factory intake tube to the throttle body.
  5. Remove the Factory Airbox: Remove the single 10mm bolt securing the factory airbox to the driver’s side fender well. Firmly pull the entire airbox and tube assembly straight up to pop it out of the lower rubber mounting grommets.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Ford Mustang (2015-2016) 5.0L Engine - Red

  1. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Using your T20 Torx driver, carefully remove the two screws holding the MAF sensor inside the factory airbox. Gently pull the sensor out. Do not touch the exposed MAF element wire! Transfer it immediately to your new Red Cold Air Intake tube and secure it using the supplied aftermarket hardware.
  2. Mount the Heat Shield: Drop the new aftermarket heat shield into the factory location, seating the bottom mounting pegs directly into the factory lower rubber grommets. Secure the top tab using the original 10mm bolt.
  3. Install the Couplers and Tube: Slide the provided silicone coupler onto the throttle body and lightly tighten the 8mm hose clamp. Insert the new red intake tube into the throttle body coupler and guide it through the heat shield. Tighten all 8mm clamps until snug.
  4. Reconnect Lines and Harness: Push your factory PCV and EVAP lines onto the new billet fittings on the intake tube until you hear an audible click. Plug the MAF sensor harness back in and engage the red locking tab.
  5. Install the Filter and Reconnect Battery: Slide the high-flow air filter onto the end of the intake tube inside the heat shield and lock it down with your 8mm socket. Reconnect your negative battery terminal with your 10mm socket.
  6. The First Startup Protocol: Start your 2015-2016 Ford Mustang 5.0L. Do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. Let the Coyote idle completely untouched so the ECU can read the new MAF parameters and calibrate to the increased airflow volume.
