Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor on the S197 Mustang is directional and extremely sensitive. When transferring it from the stock housing to the new intake tube, ensure the airflow arrow (or the open side of the bulb) faces toward the engine. If you install it backward or touch the sensitive wire bulb with your fingers, your Mustang will idle roughly or throw a Check Engine Light immediately.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using an 8mm wrench to reset the ECU fuel trim learning and prevent shorts.
  2. Disconnect Electronics & Hoses: Slide the red locking tab back on the MAF sensor harness and squeeze to unplug it. Then, locate the PCV breather hose on the driver’s side valve cover and disconnect the quick-connect fitting (press the green tab or pull firmly depending on the year).
  3. Loosen Clamps: Use a flathead screwdriver or 8mm socket to loosen the hose clamp securing the intake tube to the throttle body.
  4. Remove the Airbox: Locate the single mounting bolt on the inner fender holding the factory airbox in place. Remove it using a 10mm socket. Lift the entire factory assembly (box and tube) out of the engine bay in one piece.

Phase 2: Installing the Upgrade

  1. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Using your T-20 Torx bit, carefully remove the two screws holding the MAF sensor in the factory housing. Gently pull the sensor out and immediately install it into the new intake tube using the supplied hardware. Do not over-tighten these small screws.
  2. Install the Heat Shield: Place the new heat shield into the car. Reuse the factory mounting bolt and tighten it down with a 10mm socket. Ensure the rubber weatherstripping is seated along the top edges to seal against the hood.
  3. Mount the Intake Tube: Slide the silicone coupler onto the throttle body and secure slightly. Insert the new intake tube (with the MAF sensor installed) into the coupler and through the heat shield. Tighten all worm-gear clamps using a flathead screwdriver or 8mm socket until snug.
  4. Final Connections: Install the high-flow air filter onto the end of the tube inside the heat shield. Reconnect the PCV breather hose to the new port on the intake tube. Finally, plug the MAF harness back into the sensor and reconnect your negative battery terminal.
