Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time

Tools You Will Need

  • T20 Security Torx bit (mandatory for the MAF sensor transfer)
  • 11mm deep socket or Nut Driver (if your kit includes upgraded T-bolt clamps)
  • CRC Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner (highly recommended while it is apart)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The SN95 and New Edge Mustang community knows this pain all too well: the dreaded red locking tab on the factory MAF sensor harness. After two decades of under-hood heat cycles, that plastic is as brittle as a potato chip. Use a small flathead screwdriver to gently pry the red tab back before squeezing the connector. If you force it, it will shatter. Also, when extracting the factory airbox, do not forget to yank out the plastic "air silencer" jammed into the passenger fender well—it is a massive bottleneck.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part on your 1996-2004 Ford Mustang 4.6L

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench. This prevents check engine lights and forces the ECU to reset its fuel trims for the new airflow.
  2. Disconnect the Sensors: Unplug the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor and the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor (if your specific model year has a separate IAT). Carefully slide the red locking tab back with a small flathead screwdriver and pull the plug straight off.
  3. Remove the PCV and IAC Lines: Pull the crankcase vent tube and the Idle Air Control (IAC) bypass hose off the factory plastic intake tube. A panel popper can help gently pry the rubber hoses off if they are seized onto the plastic fittings.
  4. Loosen the Clamps: Grab your 8mm socket or a flathead screwdriver and completely loosen the factory worm-gear clamps securing the intake tube to the throttle body and the airbox. Pull the corrugated plastic tube out of the engine bay.
  5. Extract the Factory Airbox: Remove the single fender-mounted retaining bolt using a 10mm socket. Grab the entire airbox assembly and pull straight up to pop it out of its lower rubber grommets. Reach into the fender hole and pull out the factory plastic air silencer.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Ford Mustang (1996-2004) 4.6L Engine

  1. Transfer the MAF Sensor: This is the most critical step. Using your T20 Security Torx bit, remove the factory MAF sensor from the OEM housing. Extremely carefully, transfer it to your new billet or plastic MAF housing. DO NOT touch the delicate wire element inside the sensor! Secure it using the provided Allen bolts or factory Torx screws.
  2. Mount the Heat Shield: Assemble the supplied aftermarket heat shield. Drop it into the passenger side engine bay, utilizing the factory lower grommet holes, and bolt it to the fender apron using your 10mm socket and the factory bolt you removed earlier.
  3. Install Couplers and Tube: Slide the provided silicone couplers onto your throttle body and the new MAF housing. Slip the new clamps loosely over the couplers. Route the new aluminum or polyethylene intake tube into place. Once aligned, lock down all clamps snugly using your 8mm socket or 11mm deep socket (if using T-bolt clamps). Do not overtighten and crush the tube.
  4. Connect Hoses and Filter: Push your factory PCV and IAC breather hoses onto the welded fittings on the new intake tube. Drop the high-flow conical air filter into the heat shield cavity (or fender well, depending on your kit design) and clamp it down tight to the pipe using your 8mm socket.
  5. The 20-Second Startup Rule: Reconnect the MAF harness, pushing the red locking tab back in to secure it. Reconnect your negative battery cable with your 10mm wrench. Start the Mustang and let it idle. DO NOT touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. The ECU needs this undisturbed idle time to calibrate the new, massively increased volume of incoming air.
