Performance Cold Air Intake for Ford Focus (2.0L Zetec DOHC)

The factory air intake system on your Ford Focus 2.0L, while quiet, is a significant bottleneck. Designed to minimize noise and production costs, it features restrictive bends, resonators, and a small air filter box that starves your engine of the cool, dense air it needs to perform optimally. This common limitation often leads to sluggish throttle response and a feeling of untapped potential, especially when accelerating onto the highway or passing.

Our precision-engineered Cold Air Intake replaces these restrictive OEM components with a free-flowing, wide-diameter intake tube and a high-flow, conical air filter. By delivering a substantially larger volume of colder air directly to your engine’s combustion chamber, this system not only boosts horsepower and torque but also sharpens throttle response across the entire RPM range. You’ll immediately notice a more energetic pull and a satisfying, sporty growl under acceleration.

Why You Need This Upgrade

  • Significant Power Gains: Boosts horsepower and torque by up to 10%, giving your Focus a noticeable edge in acceleration and passing power.
  • Improved Fuel Efficiency: By optimizing the air-to-fuel mixture with cooler, denser air, your engine operates more efficiently, potentially leading to better MPG under cruising conditions.
  • Instant Throttle Response: Eliminates the lag associated with the restrictive factory setup, providing a more immediate and engaging feel every time you press the accelerator.
  • Superior Air Filtration: Features an advanced, high-flow air filter designed to capture harmful contaminants while maximizing airflow, protecting your engine’s longevity.
  • Enhanced Engine Sound: Experience a more aggressive and satisfying induction roar, transforming the sound of your 2.0L Focus from mundane to sporty.
  • Durable & Reliable Design: Engineered with high-quality materials for long-term reliability and performance, ensuring this upgrade stands the test of time without compromising daily drivability.

Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time

  • Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
  • Difficulty: 2/10 - Beginner friendly. No lift required, standard hand tools only.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm socket and ratchet (Battery terminal and airbox mounting bolts)
  • Flathead screwdriver or 7mm/8mm nut driver (Hose clamps)
  • T20 Security Torx bit (Required for transferring the MAF sensor)
  • Needle-nose pliers (PCV breather hose clamp)
  • Panel popper tool (Optional, for wiring harness clips)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor on the 2000-2003 Ford Focus is extremely sensitive. Do not touch the silver wire filament inside the sensor housing with your fingers or a rag. The oils from your skin can cause the sensor to fail, leading to rough idling or a check engine light immediately after install. Handle it by the plastic housing only.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Intake

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Safety first. Use a 10mm socket or wrench to disconnect the negative battery terminal. This resets the ECU so it can relearn the airflow for your 2000-2003 Ford Focus 2.0L.
  2. Disconnect the Sensors: Locate the MAF sensor on the intake tube. Slide the red locking tab back (carefully, it is brittle) and squeeze to unplug the harness. If the wire loom is clipped to the airbox, use a panel popper to pry it free.
  3. Remove Breather Hose: Locate the PCV breather hose connected to the factory intake tube. Use needle-nose pliers to compress the spring clamp and slide the hose off.
  4. Loosen the Clamps: Use a flathead screwdriver or 7mm nut driver to loosen the hose clamp connecting the intake tube to the throttle body.
  5. Remove the Airbox: Remove the 10mm bolt securing the airbox to the fender wall (if present). Firmly pull the entire airbox assembly straight up. It is held in place by rubber grommets that may require a solid tug to release.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake

  1. Transfer the MAF Sensor: This is the critical step. Use a T20 Torx bit to remove the sensor from the factory housing. Carefully insert it into the new intake pipe, ensuring the O-ring is seated, and secure it with the provided hardware. Do not over-tighten; the plastic cracks easily.
  2. Install the Coupler: Place the silicone coupler over the throttle body. Secure it with a hose clamp using a flathead screwdriver, but do not fully tighten yet to allow for adjustment.
  3. Mount the Intake Pipe: Slide the new intake pipe into the coupler. Align the mounting bracket with the factory vibration mount on the vehicle chassis. Secure the pipe using the provided hardware and your 10mm socket.
  4. Connect Hoses and Harness: Reconnect the PCV breather hose to the nipple on the new pipe. Plug the MAF sensor harness back in until it clicks. Finally, tighten all hose clamps at the throttle body and filter connection until snug. Reconnect your battery.
