Tools You Will Need

10mm wrench or deep socket (for battery terminal)
7mm and 8mm sockets with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet and 6-inch extension
Flathead screwdriver or nylon panel popper
T-20 Torx bit (for transferring the factory sensor)

Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The biggest headache DIYers face on the 2015-2020 F-150 5.0L Coyote platform is snapping the factory Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor tab and breaking the brittle plastic PCV quick-disconnect lines. Do not pry these with excessive force. If the grey or green quick-release tabs on the PCV lines won’t budge, push the hose IN toward the fitting first to relieve tension, press the tab, and then pull off. Break one of these, and you’re walking to the dealership for a $60 proprietary hose.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent the ECU from throwing a check engine light while sensors are unplugged.
Unplug the IAT Sensor: Locate the IAT sensor on the factory 2015-2020 Ford F-150 5.0L intake tube. Slide the red locking tab back with your thumb, press down on the release mechanism, and gently unplug the harness. Tuck the wire out of the way.
Disconnect PCV and EVAP Lines: Press the release tabs on the two hard plastic breather lines connected to the intake tube. Pull straight back. If they are stuck, carefully use a flathead screwdriver to depress the tab, but do not pry against the brittle plastic.
Loosen Factory Hose Clamps: Use your 7mm socket to loosen the band clamps at the throttle body and at the factory airbox lid.

Transfer the IAT Sensor: Gently twist the factory IAT sensor counter-clockwise to remove it from the OEM tube. Handle the probe delicately—do not touch the exposed electronic element. Install it into your new intake tube using the supplied rubber grommet or secure it with a T-20 Torx bit if your kit utilizes machine screws.
Mount the New Heat Shield: Drop the aftermarket heat shield into the factory fender grommets. Secure it to the chassis using the factory hardware and your 8mm socket.

Reconnect Vital Lines: Snap the factory PCV and EVAP quick-connect lines onto the new billet or plastic tube fittings. You should hear an audible click. Plug the IAT sensor harness back in and push the red locking tab forward to secure it.
Execute ECU Relearn Protocol: Reconnect the negative battery terminal with your 10mm wrench. Start the engine. Do not touch the gas pedal for exactly 20 seconds. Let the Coyote engine idle so the computer can properly calibrate to the increased airflow volume without triggering a lean condition code.
