Tools You Will Need
- 10mm wrench (for the battery terminal)
- 8mm and 10mm sockets with a 1/4-inch drive ratchet
- Flathead screwdriver (for hose clamps and lock tabs)
- T20 Torx bit (for the factory IAT sensor)
- Panel popper tool (for wiring harness anchors)
If you browse the EcoBoost forums, you’ll quickly learn about the dreaded IAT sensor locking tab and the twist-lock PCV fitting on the driver-side turbo inlet. The heat cycling on the 2012-2014 Ford F-150 3.5L makes these plastics incredibly brittle. Do NOT force the red/grey locking tab on the sensor harness. Use a small flathead screwdriver to gently ease it back. When removing the factory PCV line, push down slightly before twisting counter-clockwise to prevent snapping the internal retaining clips. A broken PCV fitting means a massive vacuum leak and a sidelined truck.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part for your 2012-2014 Ford F-150 3.5L
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and allow the ECU to reset its airflow learning parameters.
- Unplug the IAT Sensor: Locate the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor on the factory intake tube. Carefully slide the locking tab back, press down, and pull the plug free. Use a panel popper to carefully pry the wiring harness anchor out of the factory plastic tube.
- Disconnect the PCV Line: Locate the hard plastic PCV line connecting to the driver side of the factory Y-pipe. Gently press the connector inward, twist it counter-clockwise, and pull it off the tube. Tuck it safely out of the way.
- Loosen the Clamps: Using an 8mm socket or flathead screwdriver, loosen the three factory hose clamps securing the intake Y-pipe to the twin turbo inlet tubes and the main airbox lid.
- Remove the Factory Airbox: Unsnap the metal retaining clips on the factory airbox lid. Pull the factory Y-pipe and airbox lid out as one complete assembly. Remove the dirty factory paper filter. If your new kit requires replacing the lower tray, use a 10mm socket to remove the single bolt securing the lower airbox housing to the fender well.
Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Ford F-150 (2012-2014) 3.5L V6 EcoBoost Engine Black Stage 2
- Transfer the IAT Sensor: This is the most critical step. Using a T20 Torx bit, carefully remove the two screws holding the IAT sensor in the factory tube. Gently pull the sensor out with a slight twisting motion. Do not touch the delicate electronic element. Insert it into the new Stage 2 aluminum intake tube and secure it using the supplied aftermarket hardware and an Allen wrench (usually 3mm or 4mm depending on the kit).
- Mount the New Heat Shield: Drop the new heat shield/airbox assembly into the factory rubber grommets on the fender well. Secure it using the factory lower bolt and your 10mm socket. Install the edge trim around the top of the shield to seal it against the hood.
- Install the Couplers and Tube: Slide the provided silicone couplers onto the turbo inlet pipes and the new Stage 2 intake tube. Loosely slide the supplied worm-gear clamps over the couplers. Drop the massive Stage 2 cone filter into the heat shield, push the new Y-pipe into the couplers, and connect the filter.
- Lock It Down: Once everything is aligned without rubbing against the engine block or coolant lines, tighten all hose clamps securely using your 8mm socket. Reconnect the twist-lock PCV fitting onto the new billet aluminum port until it clicks. Plug your IAT sensor back in and push the locking tab forward.
- The 20-Second Rule: Reconnect the negative battery terminal with your 10mm wrench. On the first startup of your newly upgraded 2012-2014 Ford F-150 3.5L, the vehicle gas pedal should not be touched for at least 20 seconds. Let the engine idle strictly on its own so the ECU can calibrate to the massive increase in airflow without throwing a rich/lean check engine code.
