Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
For 12th Gen Coyote owners, the factory PCV breather hose fitting is notoriously brittle. Squeeze the grey tab gently to release it—do not force it or pry it with a screwdriver, or you’ll be making a trip to the dealer for a new hose assembly. Secondly, the red locking tab on your 2011-2014 Ford F-150 5.0L MAF sensor plug is likely baked from years of under-hood heat. Slide it back carefully with a fingernail or a 90-degree pick tool before unplugging to prevent snapping it.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part from your 2011-2014 Ford F-150 5.0L

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and short circuits.
  2. Unplug the MAF Sensor: Locate the Mass Air Flow sensor on the factory airbox lid. Slide the red locking tab back carefully, press the release clip down, and unplug the wiring harness.
  3. Disconnect the PCV Line: Gently squeeze the grey quick-disconnect tab on the factory PCV breather hose attached to the intake tube. Pull it straight off the fitting.
  4. Loosen the Hose Clamps: Grab your 8mm socket and loosen the factory worm clamps securing the intake tube to the throttle body and the upper airbox lid.
  5. Extract the Factory Airbox: Remove the single 10mm bolt securing the driver’s side of the airbox to the inner fender. Firmly pull the entire lower airbox assembly straight up to pop it out of the factory rubber mounting grommets.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake

  1. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Using your T20 Torx bit, carefully back out the two screws holding the factory MAF sensor in the OEM housing. Transfer it to your new intake tube immediately. DO NOT touch the sensor element itself; transferring skin oils will ruin it and cause aggressive rough idling on your 5.0L.
  2. Assemble and Drop In the Heat Shield: Assemble the aftermarket heat shield per the manufacturer’s instructions, pressing the supplied weatherstripping onto the top edge. Drop the shield into the factory lower grommets and secure it to the fender using the factory 10mm bolt.
  3. Mount the Intake Tube: Slide the provided silicone couplers onto the throttle body and the new intake tube. Secure them loosely with the provided worm gear clamps using your 8mm socket. Check your clearances so the tube does not rub against the coolant reservoir tank, then lock all clamps down tight.
  4. Reconnect Plumbing and Wiring: Snap the factory PCV breather hose onto the new tube’s aluminum fitting (listen for the distinct "click"). Plug in the MAF sensor harness and engage the red locking tab.
  5. Execute Initial Startup Protocol: Reconnect the negative battery terminal with your 10mm wrench. Start the engine, but do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. Let the vehicle idle completely untouched so the ECU can learn the new, higher airflow volume without throwing a lean code.
