Maximize Your Muscle: High-Flow Cold Air Intake for Ford F-150, Expedition & Lincoln Navigator’s 3V Triton

Who It’s For: Designed specifically for Ford F-150, Expedition, and Lincoln Navigator owners running the potent 3V Triton engine, who demand more from their truck or SUV than the factory setup allows.

The Problem: You’ve got a robust 3V Triton under the hood, but the stock intake system is a notorious choke point. It’s designed for quiet operation and cost-efficiency, not peak performance. This restrictive design limits airflow, causing the engine to work harder for less power, dulling throttle response, and often drawing in warmer air from the engine bay, leading to dreaded heat soak. You’re leaving horsepower and torque on the table, and your engine’s true character is muffled.

The Solution: We engineered this Cold Air Intake to eliminate those factory design flaws. By replacing the restrictive stock airbox and piping, this system provides a direct, high-volume path for cooler, denser air directly to your 3V Triton. The result? Sharper throttle response, a noticeable bump in horsepower and torque, and a more aggressive engine note that truly reflects the power beneath your foot. It’s a proven upgrade that wakes up your vehicle’s performance without voiding your factory warranty.

Why This is the Ultimate Upgrade

  • Performance Boost: Experience an approximate 10-15 horsepower increase and improved torque delivery that you’ll feel immediately. This means better acceleration, more responsive highway passing, and even a slight bump in fuel efficiency under normal driving conditions. Plus, that deeper, throaty growl from your engine? Priceless.
  • Engineered Durability: Crafted from high-quality, lightweight polished glossy black CNC machined aircraft aluminum, this intake is built to last. The included black air filter is designed for superior filtration and can be cleaned and re-oiled, saving you money on disposable filters in the long run. The integrated heat shield ensures cool air inflow, maximizing performance gains.
  • Seamless Installation: Designed for a direct bolt-on fit, this kit comes complete with aluminum piping, the black air filter, heat shield, vacuum hoses, mounting brackets, and all necessary hardware. Most installations can be completed in about an hour with basic hand tools, making it a perfect DIY upgrade. We always recommend resetting your battery terminal after installation to allow your engine computer to "re-learn" the increased airflow for optimal performance.

Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time

  • Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
  • Difficulty: 3/10 - Basic bolt-on, but requires a delicate touch with aged 5.4L Triton factory plastics and the sensitive MAF sensor.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm wrench (for the battery terminal)
  • 8mm socket & ratchet (for hose clamps)
  • 10mm & 13mm sockets (for airbox mounting bolts)
  • T20 Torx bit (for the factory MAF sensor screws)
  • 4mm Allen key (for aftermarket MAF hardware)
  • Panel popper tool (for detaching wiring harness clips)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The 2009-2010 Ford F-150 5.4L 3V is notorious for having an incredibly brittle PCV/crankcase breather hose connection on the factory intake tube. The green or grey plastic locking tab becomes fragile from years of engine heat cycles. Do not yank it! Gently squeeze the tab and push the fitting inward toward the tube first to break the seal, then carefully slide it off. If you snap this tab, you will have a massive vacuum leak, a rough idle, and an immediate Check Engine Light (P0171/P0174 lean codes).

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and allow the 2009-2010 Ford F-150 5.4L ECU to reset.
  2. Unplug the MAF Sensor: Depress the red locking tab on the Mass Air Flow harness to unplug the sensor. Using your T20 Torx bit, extract the two factory screws and gently pull the MAF sensor out of the OEM intake tube. Place it in a safe, completely clean location. Do not drop it or touch the internal wire element.
  3. Detach the PCV Breather: Carefully squeeze the locking tab to release the crankcase breather hose from the main intake tube. Gently push it aside.
  4. Loosen the Hose Clamps: Loosen the factory worm-gear clamps securing the intake tube to the throttle body and the airbox using an 8mm socket. Wiggle the factory tube free from the throttle body.
  5. Extract the Factory Airbox: Remove the driver-side fender mounting bolt using a 13mm socket. Use a panel popper to unclip the MAF wiring harness from the side of the box, then lift the entire lower airbox assembly out of the engine bay.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Ford F150 (2009-2010) 5.4L Engine

  1. Assemble the Heat Shield: Bolt the aftermarket heat shield together using the supplied hardware and mount it to the factory F-150 chassis points using your 10mm socket. Drop the high-flow air filter in, leaving the clamp loose for now.
  2. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Carefully insert the factory MAF sensor into the new machined housing on the aftermarket intake tube. Ensure the sensor opening faces the incoming air (towards the filter). Secure the sensor firmly using the provided hardware and a 4mm Allen key.
  3. Install the Throttle Body Coupler: Slide the provided silicone step-coupler over the 5.4L throttle body and tighten the inner clamp snugly using your 8mm socket.
  4. Route the New Intake Tube: Guide the new intake tube through the heat shield and insert it into the throttle body coupler. Push the PCV breather hose onto the new machined fitting until you hear an audible click. Plug the harness back into the MAF sensor. Align the tube for best fitment, then tighten all remaining hose clamps using the 8mm socket.
  5. Perform the ECU Relearn: Reconnect the negative battery terminal using your 10mm wrench. Turn the key to start the engine. On the first startup, the vehicle gas pedal should not be touched for 20 seconds until the ECU adjusts to the massive increase in airflow volume.
