High-Flow Cold Air Intake for 1997-2001 Ford, Mercury Explorer, Mountaineer (5.0L Windsor / UN105)

Direct Bolt-On Airflow Optimization: Replaces the restrictive factory air box and convoluted rubber intake tubing to lower intake air temperatures, reduce turbulence, and increase volumetric efficiency on the 5.0L V8 engine.

The Stock Explorer, Mountaineer Airflow Bottleneck

The factory intake system on the UN105 Explorer and Mountaineer prioritizes NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) reduction over performance. The OEM setup utilizes corrugated rubber hoses and a baffled plastic airbox that severely disrupts laminar airflow before it reaches the throttle body. Over years of heat cycling around the 5.0L Windsor block, the stock plastic resonators and rubber bellows degrade, harden, and become prone to unmetered vacuum leaks. Furthermore, the enclosed factory box traps ambient engine heat, resulting in severe heat soak. This robs the V8 of vital oxygen density, suppressing the crucial low-end torque required for towing and off-road hauling.

The Engineering Solution

This cold air intake system eliminates factory restriction by utilizing mandrel-bent, T-6063 aerospace-grade aluminum piping with a 3-inch outer diameter. The smooth internal bore removes the turbulence caused by OEM corrugated tubing, ensuring a steady, high-velocity stream of dense air reaches the intake manifold. The polished aluminum construction provides superior structural rigidity while actively dissipating residual engine bay heat. Paired with a high-flow dry air filter element, the system drastically increases total filtration surface area without the mass-airflow (MAF) sensor fouling risks common with heavily oiled filters. The kit integrates durable PVC couplers, replacement vacuum hoses, and heavy-duty clamps to ensure a permanent, leak-proof seal that reliably withstands engine torque deflection under heavy loads.
