Performance Cold Air Intake for Dodge RAM 1500/2500/3500 (5.7L V8 Engine 2009-2015)

The factory air intake system on your Dodge Ram’s 5.7L HEMI V8 is designed with economy in mind, often featuring convoluted piping and a restrictive air box that chokes airflow. This limitation prevents your powerful HEMI engine from ingesting the optimal volume of cool, dense air it needs to generate peak horsepower and torque, leading to sluggish throttle response and diminished performance, especially under load.

This high-performance cold air intake system specifically addresses these restrictions by replacing the inefficient OEM components with a streamlined, high-flow induction path and an integrated heat barrier. Engineered to maximize airflow and minimize intake temperatures, it allows your 5.7L HEMI to draw in a significantly larger volume of oxygen-rich air, resulting in a more efficient combustion cycle, enhanced power output, and a more aggressive engine note.

Why You Need This Upgrade

  • Consistent Cold Air Delivery: The integrated black heat barrier effectively isolates the air filter from radiant engine bay heat, ensuring a steady supply of dense, cool air for optimal combustion.
  • Significant HP/Torque Gains: By optimizing airflow and reducing restrictions, this system enhances combustion efficiency, delivering a noticeable boost in both horsepower and torque across the entire RPM range, perfect for towing or spirited driving.
  • Sharpened Drivability: Experience immediate throttle response and reduced intake lag. Power is delivered crisply the moment you press the accelerator, making your Ram feel more agile and responsive.
  • Enhanced Under-hood Aesthetics: Featuring a high-luster chrome intake tube paired with black components, this cold air intake provides a striking, custom look that modernizes and elevates your engine bay’s appearance.
  • Easy, Seamless Installation: Designed as a direct bolt-on upgrade, it utilizes existing factory mounting points for a straightforward installation process that can be completed with basic hand tools.

Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time

  • Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
  • Difficulty: 2/10 - Beginner friendly, basic hand tools needed. No lifting required.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm Socket & Ratchet (Battery terminal, airbox mounting bolts)
  • 8mm Socket or Flathead Screwdriver (Hose clamps)
  • 4mm Allen/Hex Key (Often required for aftermarket hardware)
  • Extension Bar (6-inch extension helps reach the throttle body clamp)
  • Silicone Lubricant or Dish Soap (To help slide the IAT sensor into the grommet)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor on the 5.7L HEMI is notoriously fragile. It is a plastic twist-lock sensor located in the stock intake tube near the throttle body. DO NOT yank it out by the connector. Twist it gently counter-clockwise to unlock it before pulling. If the O-ring is dry, it will stick—take your time or you’ll be buying a new sensor from the dealership.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

This section specifically applies to the 2009-2015 Dodge Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 equipped with the 5.7L HEMI V8.

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Safety first. Use a 10mm socket or wrench to disconnect the negative battery terminal. This resets the ECU so it can relearn the airflow from the new Cold Air Intake.
  2. Remove Engine Cover: Lift straight up on the plastic engine cover to pop it off its rubber grommets. Set it aside to expose the throttle body.
  3. Disconnect the IAT Sensor: Locate the electrical harness on the intake tube near the throttle body. Squeeze the tab and unplug the harness. Carefully twist the sensor counter-clockwise and remove it from the tube. Place it somewhere safe immediately.
  4. Detach Crankcase Vent: Locate the crankcase vent hose (connected to the oil fill neck area). Disconnect it from the factory airbox. If the hose is stuck, use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry it loose without cracking the fitting.
  5. Remove Intake Tube: Use an 8mm socket or flathead screwdriver to loosen the hose clamp at the throttle body. Pull the tube free.
  6. Remove Airbox Assembly: The factory airbox is held in by grommets and sometimes a fender bolt. Rock the airbox back and forth while lifting straight up to release the seating pins from the fender well. Remove the entire assembly.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Dodge RAM 5.7L

  1. Assemble the Heat Shield: Install the edge trim seal onto the new heat shield. Use the provided hardware (usually requires a 10mm socket and 4mm hex key) to mount the shield into the factory airbox location. Ensure the grommets seat fully.
  2. Install Throttle Body Coupler: Slide the silicone reducer coupler onto the throttle body. Secure it loosely with the provided hose clamp using an 8mm socket. Do not overtighten yet.
  3. Transfer the IAT Sensor: Insert the supplied rubber grommet into the new intake tube. Apply a tiny dab of silicone lube or soapy water to the O-ring of your factory IAT sensor, then gently push/twist it into the grommet. Orientation matters: ensure the sensitive bulb of the sensor is exposed to the airflow.
  4. Install the Intake Tube: Slide the new tube into the throttle body coupler. Align the other end with the heat shield filter adapter.
  5. Connect the Filter: Slide the high-flow air filter onto the tube (or adapter inside the heat shield) and tighten the large clamp using an 8mm socket or flathead.
  6. Reconnect Lines: Reconnect the crankcase vent hose to the new fitting on the intake tube. Plug the IAT sensor harness back into the sensor.
  7. Final Check & Battery: Tighten all hose clamps at the throttle body and filter. Reinstall the engine cover. Reconnect the negative battery terminal using your 10mm socket.
  8. ECU Relearn: Start the engine. Let it idle for 60 seconds without touching the gas pedal. This allows the computer to adjust to the increased airflow of the 5.7L Cold Air Intake.
