Performance Cold Air Intake for Dodge Neon (2.0L I4)
The factory air box and restrictive paper filter in your 1995-1999 Dodge Neon’s 2.0L engine act as a significant bottleneck, choking the engine’s ability to breathe freely. This inherent limitation hinders optimal combustion, resulting in dulled throttle response and diminished power output across the RPM range.
This high-velocity cold air intake system replaces that inadequate OEM setup with a streamlined, high-flow induction path, allowing your engine to draw in a larger volume of oxygen-rich air with significantly less effort. By maximizing airflow efficiency, this upgrade optimizes the air-to-fuel ratio, providing a substantial boost in horsepower and torque, and delivering crisper, more immediate throttle sensitivity.
Why You Need This Upgrade
- Maximized Airflow: Ensures your 2.0L engine receives an unrestricted, dense charge of air, crucial for peak performance and efficiency.
- Significant HP/TQ Gains: Experience up to a 10% increase in horsepower and torque, transforming your Neon’s acceleration and passing power.
- Immediate Throttle Response: Reduces intake lag, delivering instant power and a more connected driving experience the moment you press the pedal.
- Aggressive Engine Note: Gives your Neon’s 2.0L engine a deeper, more aggressive growl under acceleration, enhancing the driving character.
- Hassle-Free Installation: Engineered for a precise fit in the 1995-1999 Neon, utilizing existing mounting points for a straightforward upgrade with basic hand tools.

Installation & Tools
The Wrench Time
- Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
- Difficulty: 3/10 - Basic hand tools and simple sensor transfer required.
Tools You Will Need
- 10mm Socket & Ratchet (For battery and factory airbox bolts)
- 10mm Wrench (For battery terminal)
- 8mm Nut Driver or Socket (For hose clamps)
- 13mm Socket (For lower resonator brackets)
- Flathead Screwdriver (For gently prying brittle breather hoses)
- Silicone Lubricant Spray (Crucial for the IAT sensor transfer)
If you’ve spent any time on 1gn Neon forums, you know the factory plastics under the hood of a 1995-1999 Dodge Neon 2.0L turn into peanut brittle after two decades of heat cycling. The biggest headache is the factory Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor. Do NOT pry it out with a screwdriver. Spray the base with silicone lubricant and gently twist back and forth while pulling. If you force it, the plastic probe will snap off inside the old tube, leaving you stranded with a massive vacuum leak and a Check Engine Light.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start your 1995-1999 Dodge Neon 2.0L install by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and clear the ECU memory.
- Unplug the IAT Sensor: Locate the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor on the factory rubber intake tube. Gently depress the locking tab and pull the harness free. Do not yank the wires.
- Remove the PCV Breather: Disconnect the factory crankcase breather hose running from the valve cover to the intake tube. The factory 1gn SOHC/DOHC hoses get rock-hard, so use a flathead screwdriver to carefully pry the edge of the hose up if it refuses to budge.
- Loosen Throttle Body Clamp: Grab an 8mm nut driver or 8mm socket to loosen the factory worm-gear clamp securing the rubber intake tube to the throttle body.
- Extract the Factory Airbox: Unbolt the factory airbox and resonator assembly using your 10mm socket and 13mm socket. Wiggle the entire restrictive assembly free from its grommets and lift it out of the engine bay to expose your fender well area.
Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Dodge Neon (1995-1999) 2.0L 4 Cylinders Engine Red
- Mount the Silicone Coupler: Slide the new silicone transition coupler onto your throttle body. Slip two supplied hose clamps over the coupler and snug the throttle body side down lightly with your 8mm socket.
- Transfer the IAT Sensor: Handle with extreme care. Apply a drop of silicone spray to the newly supplied grommet on your Red Cold Air Intake tube. Gently push the factory IAT sensor into the grommet until it is fully seated and airtight.
- Route the Intake Tube: Feed the new cold air intake pipe into the engine bay, guiding the lower end toward the fender cavity where it can pull in the coldest ambient air. Slip the upper end into the silicone coupler and tighten the remaining clamp with your 8mm socket.
- Secure the Mounting Brackets: Line up the welded bracket on the intake tube with the factory mounting point. Thread in the supplied hardware and tighten it down with a 10mm socket. This is critical to prevent the aluminum tube from vibrating against your chassis.
- Install the Cone Filter & Reconnect: Slide the high-flow red cone filter onto the end of the intake tube and lock it down tightly with an 8mm socket. Push the factory PCV breather hose onto the intake’s welded nipple, click the IAT harness back into the sensor, and reconnect your negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench.
- The First Startup Protocol: Fire up your Dodge Neon. Do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. Let the engine idle independently so the ECU can calibrate to the massive new volume of airflow and register the relocated IAT sensor readings.
