Feeling your 4.7L V8 feeling a little sluggish, especially when towing or merging? Imagine an immediate surge of power, sharper throttle response, and a deep, authoritative growl every time you hit the gas.

Performance Cold Air Intake for Dodge Durango/Dakota (4.7L V8)

The factory air intake system on your 2000-2002 Dodge Durango or Dakota with the 4.7L V8 engine is a significant bottleneck, designed for quiet operation rather than peak performance. Its restrictive air box and corrugated intake tube choke the engine, limiting the volume and velocity of incoming air, which hinders your truck’s ability to breathe and produce its full potential.

This high-performance Cold Air Intake replaces those limiting components with a smooth, large-diameter intake tube and a high-flow, washable air filter. By delivering a massive surge of cold, dense air directly to your 4.7L engine, it optimizes combustion, unlocks hidden horsepower and torque, and dramatically improves throttle response for a truly engaging driving experience on or off the road.

Why You Need This Upgrade

  • High-Volume Induction: Replaces narrow factory ducting with a high-flow pathway to satisfy the engine’s demand for air during heavy work and spirited driving.
  • Enhanced Power Output: Optimizes the air-to-fuel ratio to provide a boost in both horsepower and torque by up to 10%, giving your Durango or Dakota more usable power.
  • Immediate Throttle Response: Reduces intake lag to ensure that power is delivered the moment you step on the gas, improving drivability and acceleration.
  • Authoritative Sound Profile: Enhances the vehicle’s acoustic character with a powerful, resonant intake roar during acceleration, matching your truck’s rugged persona.

Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time

  • Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
  • Difficulty: 3/10 - Basic hand tools, but wrestling the bulky factory 4.7L resonator box out of the engine bay takes a little patience.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm Socket with a 6-inch extension (1/4-inch or 3/8-inch drive)
  • 10mm Wrench
  • 8mm Socket or Nut Driver
  • Flathead Screwdriver or Panel Popper
  • Silicone Spray or penetrating oil (essential for stiff rubber grommets)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The Mopar 4.7L PowerTech community knows two major headaches on this chassis: the massive factory "throttle body hat" (resonator) and brittle plastics. The breather hose running from the oil filler neck to the factory intake box snaps easily. Do not yank it. Carefully twist and pull to break the seal. Additionally, the factory Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor is wedged tightly into the plastic intake tube. Spray it with a shot of silicone lubricant and gently twist it out. Prying on it with a screwdriver will snap the plastic sensor tip off right into your manifold.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights on your 2000-2002 Dodge Dakota Durango 4.7L.
  2. Loosen the Throttle Body Clamp: Use an 8mm socket to loosen the worm gear clamp securing the factory resonator hat directly to the throttle body.
  3. Unbolt the Resonator Box: Grab your 10mm socket and 6-inch extension. Locate and remove the two 10mm bolts mounting the factory air box to the passenger side fender well, and the hidden 10mm bolt securing the resonator hat to the engine bracket near the alternator.
  4. Disconnect the Breather and IAT: Carefully unclip the wire harness from the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor. Next, gently pull the rubber PCV breather hose off the oil filler neck.
  5. Remove the Factory Intake: Lift the entire bulky factory intake assembly out of the engine bay. Twist and pull the IAT sensor out of the factory tube and set it somewhere safe on your workbench—you must transfer this to the new system.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake - Red

  1. Prep the New Intake Tube: Press the supplied rubber grommet into the pre-drilled hole on your new red intake pipe. Carefully push the factory IAT sensor into this grommet. Use a drop of oil or silicone spray to help it slide in without tearing the grommet.
  2. Install the Heat Shield: Mount the new heat shield to the factory airbox locations on the passenger fender using your 10mm socket and the supplied hardware.
  3. Mount the Silicone Coupler: Slide the new silicone reducer coupler onto the throttle body. Tighten the throttle body side using an 8mm nut driver, but leave the intake side loose for adjustment.
  4. Seat the Intake Pipe & Filter: Guide the new red intake pipe into the throttle body coupler. Attach the high-flow conical filter to the end of the pipe inside the heat shield. Ensure proper clearance from A/C lines, then tighten all remaining clamps with your 8mm socket.
  5. Reconnect Hoses and Wiring: Plug the electrical harness back into the IAT sensor. Connect the supplied silicone breather hose from the fitting on the new intake pipe to the factory oil filler neck port.
  6. Final Check & Startup: Reconnect your negative battery cable. Start the 2000-2002 Dodge Dakota Durango 4.7L, but do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. The ECU needs this undisturbed idle time to recalibrate the air/fuel mixture with the new, higher airflow.
