Performance Cold Air Intake for Dodge Durango/Dakota (2000-2002) 4.7L Engine - Black
The factory air intake system in your 2000-2002 Dodge Durango or Dakota, with its restrictive design and pleated paper filter, chokes your 4.7L V8 engine’s ability to breathe freely. This inherent limitation prevents your truck or SUV from delivering its maximum horsepower and torque, leading to dulled throttle response and diminished overall performance, especially when towing or accelerating aggressively.
This high-performance cold air intake system is specifically engineered to replace that restrictive OEM setup, providing a streamlined, high-flow pathway for oxygen-rich air. By drawing in a larger volume of cooler, denser air, your 4.7L V8 can achieve a more efficient combustion, translating directly into significant gains in horsepower and torque, crisper throttle response, and a more aggressive induction roar that matches your Dodge’s rugged character.
Why You Need This Upgrade
- Unleash Peak Power: Replaces narrow factory ducting with a high-flow pathway, boosting horsepower and torque by up to 10% for superior acceleration and towing capability.
- Sharper Throttle Response: Reduces intake lag significantly, ensuring that power is delivered instantly the moment you press the accelerator pedal.
- Aggressive Engine Sound: Enhances your 4.7L V8’s acoustic profile, providing a deeper, more authoritative growl under acceleration that truly stands out.
- Improved Fuel Efficiency: By allowing the engine to breathe more efficiently, it can optimize combustion, potentially leading to better fuel economy under normal driving conditions.
- Easy Direct-Fit Installation: Engineered as a direct bolt-on replacement, utilizing existing mounting points for a straightforward installation with common hand tools, requiring no modifications.
- Reusable Performance Filter: Includes a premium, washable, and reusable performance air filter that provides superior filtration and long-term cost savings over disposable filters.

Installation & Tools
Installation & Tools
The Wrench Time
- Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
- Difficulty: 2/10 - A perfect "Gateway Drug" modification for the 4.7L PowerTech engine.
Tools You Will Need
- Flathead Screwdriver (Long blade preferred for leverage on old rubber)
- 8mm Socket or 5/16" Nut Driver (For hose clamps)
- 10mm Socket with Ratchet and Extension (Battery and air box bolts)
- 13mm Socket (For removing the mounting nut on the fender well)
- Panel Popper tool (To remove wire harness clips from the stock air box)
- Silicone Spray or Dish Soap (Mandatory for the IAT sensor grommet)
On the 2000-2002 Dodge Dakota/Durango 4.7L, the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor is the enemy. The sensor tip is fragile ceramic. When moving it from the factory rubber tube to the new intake, DO NOT force it dry. If you break the tip, your truck will run rich and throw a CEL immediately. Lubricate the new grommet generously before insertion.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Air Box & Resonator
- Disconnect the Battery: Start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket. This resets the ECU so it can relearn the increased airflow immediately.
- Remove the "Hat" (Resonator): Loosen the hose clamp connecting the large plastic resonator box (the "hat") to the throttle body using a flathead screwdriver or 8mm socket.
- Disconnect Breather & Sensor: Unplug the wiring harness from the IAT sensor located on the intake tube. Disconnect the crankcase breather hose from the oil fill neck (these often bake onto the plastic; carefully twist with pliers if needed).
- Remove Factory Air Box: Use a 10mm socket to remove the bolts securing the air filter housing to the passenger side fender. There may be a wire harness clipped to the side—use a panel popper to free it.
- Extract the Assembly: Lift the entire resonator and air box assembly out of the engine bay as one unit. Note: The 4.7L engine bay is tight; watch your knuckles on the radiator fan shroud.
Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Dodge Durango/Dakota (2000-2002) 4.7L
- Transfer the IAT Sensor: Carefully pull the IAT sensor out of the stock tube. Install the supplied rubber grommet into the new aluminum intake pipe. Spray the grommet with silicone spray and gently twist the sensor into place. Do not push directly on the connector plug; push the base.
- Install the Throttle Body Coupler: Place the silicone reducer coupler onto the throttle body. Secure it lightly with a hose clamp using an 8mm socket. Do not fully tighten yet to allow for adjustment.
- Mount the Heat Shield: Install the heat shield (if included) using the factory mounting points on the fender well. You will likely reuse the factory 10mm bolts or the supplied hardware.
- Position the Intake Tube: Slide the intake tube into the throttle body coupler. Align the bracket on the tube with the mounting point on the heat shield or engine block (vibration mount).
- Connect Hoses: Reconnect the crankcase breather hose to the nipple on the new intake pipe. Plug the wiring harness back into the IAT sensor.
- Final Tightening: Install the air filter onto the end of the tube. Align the tube so it does not rub against the radiator hose or AC lines. Tighten all clamps with your 8mm socket or flathead.
- The Relearn: Reconnect the battery. Start the engine. Let it idle for 3-5 minutes without touching the gas pedal. The 4.7L ECU needs this time to calibrate the idle air control with the new airflow dynamics.
