Tired of that sluggish feeling when you put your foot down in your Durango? Imagine the instant satisfaction of your V8 responding immediately, breathing deeper, and pulling harder when you need it most.

Performance Cold Air Intake for Dodge Durango (2004-2009) (4.7L V8 Engine)

From the factory, your Durango’s 4.7L V8 engine is equipped with an air intake system designed more for silence and cost-efficiency than peak performance. The stock airbox, convoluted intake tubing, and restrictive filter create bottlenecks that limit the engine’s ability to draw in enough cool, dense air. This chokes your V8’s true potential, leading to a softer throttle response and less impressive power figures, especially when you’re trying to pass on the highway or tow a load.

This performance cold air intake system completely re-engineers that pathway for optimal airflow. By replacing the convoluted factory setup with smooth, large-diameter T-304 aluminum tubing and a high-flow, performance air filter, we give your 4.7L V8 a direct shot of colder, denser air. This means your engine isn’t gasping for breath; it’s inhaling deeply, ready to convert that optimal air charge into genuine, usable power and torque, giving you a more immediate, satisfying driving experience every time you hit the pedal.

Why You Need This Upgrade

  • Real Horsepower You Feel: Not just numbers on a dyno. You’ll feel your Durango pull stronger off the line and have more confident passing power on the highway, especially when you load it up.
  • Boosted Torque for Work & Play: That extra grunt means better towing capacity for your boat or trailer and more confident acceleration when merging or tackling inclines.
  • Crisper Throttle Response: Gone is the spongy pedal feel. This intake delivers a direct, immediate connection between your foot and the engine’s power, making driving your V8 Durango far more engaging.
  • Improved Fuel Efficiency: While primarily a performance upgrade, allowing your engine to breathe easier can optimize combustion, potentially leading to better miles per gallon under normal driving conditions — a welcome bonus.
  • Authentic V8 Sound: Beyond the performance, you’ll finally hear that 4.7L V8’s aggressive growl come to life under acceleration, making every drive more engaging and reminding you of the power under the hood.
  • Built to Last, Easy to Maintain: Constructed from durable T-304 aluminum and paired with a reusable, washable performance air filter, this system is designed for longevity and simple upkeep, saving you money on replacement filters in the long run.

Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time

  • Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
  • Difficulty: 3/10 - Basic hand tools required. The only tricky part is handling 15-year-old factory plastics and transferring the IAT sensor safely.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm Socket & Ratchet (For the battery terminal and factory resonator bolts)
  • 8mm Socket or Nut Driver (For removing and tightening worm gear clamps)
  • 13mm Socket (For the factory airbox mounting bolts)
  • Panel Popper Tool (To safely pry out the factory wiring harness clips)
  • Silicone Spray or Soapy Water (To help seat the sensor into the new intake)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
On the 2004-2009 Dodge Durango 4.7L, the IAT (Intake Air Temperature) sensor is locked into the factory intake tube. The forum consensus is unanimous: these plastic locking tabs are incredibly brittle after years of under-hood heat cycling. Do not yank it out. Give it a gentle quarter-turn counter-clockwise to unlock it before pulling. Also, inspect the factory crankcase breather hose that connects to the resonator box—it is highly prone to splitting. If it feels like hard plastic instead of rubber, handle it like glass.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket to prevent a Check Engine Light and ensure the ECU resets.
  2. Unplug the IAT Sensor: Locate the IAT sensor on the factory intake tube. Depress the locking tab and pull the electrical connector off. Use a panel popper to pry the plastic harness tree-clip out of the tube so the wires are completely free.
  3. Remove the Breather Hose: Disconnect the crankcase breather/PCV hose from the side of the large plastic factory resonator box. Gently twist and pull to avoid tearing the aging rubber.
  4. Unbolt the Resonator: Grab your 8mm socket and loosen the worm clamp securing the factory intake to the throttle body. Next, use a 10mm socket to remove the two bolts holding the factory resonator box directly to the engine block.
  5. Extract the OEM Airbox: Move down to the main airbox assembly. Use a 13mm socket to remove the bolts securing the lower airbox to the inner fender. Lift the entire factory intake assembly out of the engine bay.
  6. Save the Sensor: With the OEM intake on your workbench, carefully apply a quarter-turn counter-clockwise to the IAT sensor and gently rock it out of the plastic tube. Set it aside in a safe place.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Dodge Durango (2004-2009) 4.7L Engine - Blue

  1. Prep the Throttle Body: Slide the provided silicone reducer coupler onto the throttle body. Secure the engine side using an 8mm socket to tighten the worm gear clamp. Slide the second clamp loosely onto the open end of the coupler.
  2. Mount the Heat Shield: Assemble the new aftermarket heat shield and rubber edge trim. Mount the shield into the factory inner fender locations utilizing the provided hardware and your 10mm socket.
  3. Transfer the IAT Sensor: Install the provided rubber grommet into the pre-drilled hole on your new blue intake tube. Apply a single drop of silicone spray or soapy water to the grommet, then carefully push the factory IAT sensor into place. Do not push on the sensor’s delicate internal filament.
  4. Position the Tube and Filter: Guide the new blue intake tube into the throttle body coupler. Attach the new high-flow cone filter to the end sitting inside the heat shield. Once everything is aligned without rubbing against the A/C lines or alternator, lock down all remaining worm gear clamps with your 8mm socket.
  5. Reconnect and Calibrate: Reconnect the crankcase breather hose to the bung on the new intake tube. Plug the IAT electrical connector back into the sensor until it clicks. Finally, reconnect the negative battery terminal with your 10mm socket. CRITICAL: On the first startup, do not touch the gas pedal for 20 seconds. Let the 2004-2009 Dodge Durango 4.7L idle untouched so the ECU can adapt to the massively increased airflow volume without throwing a code.
